PRE-IMPLANT QUESTIONS

Postby PK Man » Tue Mar 23, 2010 7:26 pm

I have been discussing the option of an implant with my urologist. Yesterday he let me know that he wanted me to give a fair trial to injections. He is cautious about an implant for me due to the fact that I had considerable radiation damage to penis (The whole junk bin really). It is his view that I may have problems due to the damage done to my member. Has anyone here heard of this possibility or had to deal with it?

I am struggling with disappointment at been stalled, yet again, but am also taking the positive position that I will make the best of the injections and give it a fair trial period.

I would appreciate any input.

I cannot tell from your post whether or not you are using injections now. If not then you certainly should try them before jumping to an implant. The determination of whether or not you are a candidate for an implant should be made by a urologist who has done many implants and perhaps some with the same condition as you have. There are probably several around the country but the one I used for my implant has done hundreds of implants and has an engineering background so he can assess difficult conditions. His name is Dr. Doug Milam and he is on staff at the Urologic Surgical Department at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

Thanks Tamu

I have not yet started on the injections. That will be April 22nd. Six years ago, I got a demo. in Dr.'s office. Went home and got so nervous trying to fill the syringe, that I put it away and after the Prescription had become "old" threw the whole works into the garbage. It wasn't the needle, but the awkwardness of a guy with 4 thumbs on each hand trying to manage the syringe. I plan on learning how. It has helped me to hear from my Urol. that if the injections don't work for whatever reason, he will look at an implant. Sounds fair to me.

Have been on a couple of other similar sites, but this one is really good. Most of you guys are younger and more forthcoming with information very honestly.

I've been considering penile implants for a couple of years now post PCa / RRP. I was scheduled to have the surgury done on 29 Mar but opted out. For one, my EKG was off a little more than 4 years ago prior to RRP and I have not quit smoking yet. Mainly because I'm needing to get my garden in and need to build my green house. So between now and October it should all be done. I just can't see being layed up during the nice weather vs not getting anything done.

Looking foreward to pumping (NOT) you guy for info about the implants. Hopefully the moderator will let me post pics with my diary through the recovery period.

Ted

There are a few of us on this forum that have implants. I had mine 10/23/08 at Vanderbilt by Dr. Douglas Milam.

I have a rough draft of my journey calling it "One Mans Journey". If you would like a copy send me an email to jwp104@att.net. I also have more information if you would like. Feel free to ask me any questions that may arrise.

Good Luck on your journey.

So I had 2 different urine tests by two different Docs, my PCP and my Uro. My Pcp then ordered a bac test and my Uro a cystophy. Last week my tests cultures came back negative. Then I got a call from the Pcp that he found blood in the urine and suspected infection. My Uro also found blood but opted for the other test. I was confused that the 2 tests had different results. Now I know they were both the same. Funny thing I doubt my bladder scope tomorrow will show anything at all. I'm pretty sure the blood is coming from using my VED. These are just two of the many questions that came up pre surgery. I also failed my EKG. Saw a specialist who looked over prior tests asked a dozen questions and said you are fine.
I completely agree with you waiting till winter to do an implant. In Florida that;s not an issue. This Wed I'll find out just how hard the healing is. Good luck to us both.
