Reservoir and needles

Postby Opie52 » Thu Feb 07, 2019 2:51 pm

It never crossed my mind but do you characters think it’s possible to puncture a reservoir with an insulin needle?

I think it is unlikely, but I do try to avoid the side where my reservoir is. Some surgeons place the reservoir deeper than others. You should ask your surgeon to be sure.

What you find out from respondents here may not apply to your physical situation.

(My) Subcutaneous needles are fairly short and my insulin is supposed to be injected into fatty tissue close under the skin, not deep. But better safe than sorry.

From what I know about insulin injections (I was married to a diabetic for 22 years), there is NO WAY the needle should be long enough to go anywhere near the reservoir.

Why would you want to stick an insulin needle into your penis?

Not the penis.

The abdomen is where most subcutaneous insulin injections are done.

The reservoir is generally in the abdomen.

Yeah, but insulin injections are done with 5/8 inch needle (or threabouts) and sub-q. The resevoir is nowhere near the skin surface: it's up in your bladder cavity.

My bad, I was thinking of the tubes/cylinders in the penis. Very aware of injection into the abdomen, been diabetic for over 24 years and on the pump since 98. Just my ignorance.

I was just implanted on 11/27/2019 and my doctor told me to just not give insulin injections or hook my infusion set for my insulin pump up around reservoir. He showed me the area of the reservoir. I am diabetic type 1.5 . I am still learning so much from this site.

My guess is that he advised against administering near the reservoir, not because of danger of puncture but rather that insulin may affect the healing process of the surrounding tissue so the reservoir might not heal properly, or heal too fast causing complications. One such complication I can envision is if the area around the reservoir healed too quickly while the doctor still has your implant near max inflation, the fibrous capsule may form around the reservoir too rapidly, while the reservoir isn't to capacity. This can cause auto-inflation problems because your body continually squeezes the reservoir back to its partially empty size where it was when the capsule formed (during full inflation).

Reservoirs are in different positions for each of us. I have had multiple surgeries in my abdomen and due to scar tissue mine could not be where the surgeon would ideally place it. Mine resides a bit higher and closer to the skin surface. I gave talkies to several guys whose reservoir positions vary from the norm.
I am 64 and had ED from a VL. Implanted by Dr. Ronald Anglade in Atlanta on 9/18/17. I have an AMS700LGX 21 cm via a Penoscrotal incision. Very happy with results. 6" soft and 6 3/4” x 5 5/8” hard.
