Hey guys,
Boston scientific just announced the new malleable TACTRA implant.
Couldnt find much more information apart from the press release
Has anyone heard of it? And does it mean or change anything with how malleables compare to inflatable 3 piece ?
The nice things of malleables is no pump or reservoir but there are clearly many downsides as well
Anyone care to share some thoughts?
Thanks

How about a link to the announcement?

The press release does mention Nitinol, a shape-memory metal
Nitinol is a nickel-titanium alloy distinguished from other materials by its shape memory and superelastic characteristics. Nitinol is a trade name taken from the elements it's composed of—nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti)—and the scientific group that discovered it—the Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL).
that was mentioned in this forum before as a possible material for a one-piece implant that would expand and get rigid (erect) when heated to 108 Fahrenheit or thereabouts and return to its smaller shape once it cools. Animal testing scheduled for 2017-2018. Do a forum search. and post links when you find the couple of threads on the subject, please.
Here is one:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6627&p=42821
It is not completely self-contained, as the erection needed to be induced by a magnetic coil of some kind. But lack of a reservoir and scrotum pump was a big plus in my mind.
Also coming to my mind are these thoughts:
Maintaining the erection might require keeping the implant at a higher-than-body temperature. How would one do that? Friction?
What to do in a sauna or hot tub, sunbathing in Arizona or heaven forbid, if you work in a foundry?
Brings new meaning to the automotive term, "Hot Rod"

In the press release it mentions lifting the penis up. That's how the Old malleable ones work. What's the advantage of heat activate? How do I achieve 108 degrees in a body that runs at 98.6?
Has to be some additional data out there.

LookingUp is right to wonder.
In one line, the press release refers to Nitinol, which is a metal that exists in two states, depending on what its recent temperature history is, thus it can be one shape if its most recent temperature was above a certain level and a different shape if its most recent temperature was below a certain level. That is the primary reason for the existence and use of Nitinol. This would be a game-changer and should have been emphasized in the press release.
In another line the press release describes deployment of the implant in the traditional way malleables have always been deployed, manually shaping it to an erect state for use and manually shaping it elsewise for stowage. Pretty much the same way malleables have always been, unless rigidity has been improved with the new material
So the press release seems to be self-contradictory.
I opine the marketing division wonk who wrote the release needs some more education.

Re: NEW Implant By Boston Scientific ... News Released Today
Nearly 70000$.. very expensive
Does this new implant have both the simplicity of malleable implant and the naturalness of inflatable implant?
If that's true, I think it's worth paying $ 70,000.
But if new implant still have unnaturalness of malleable prothesis(always having noticeable erect) and just raise price significantly, I think it will fail in the market

I spoke with the guy at BS who market released the TACTRA implant. He said that is is malleable (so no pump) and is always pretty erect. You basically just bend it to the side when not using it. Its meant for for older guys who might have issues with pumps.
