When you go in for the implant surgery, what do you tell your kids? We're not especially prudish,....but.....not something I would prefer to discuss with my adult children. However, going in for day surgery and then being "out of commission" for several days would be hard to conceal too.
Just wondering how others handle this.

What do you tell your family?

Some of us are very open with our family and others prefer to keep it to themselves.
In my case I was very open to my close family and had a lot of support. When our daughter found out we were going to Vanderbilt by outselves she insisted that her mother and I would not go to Nashville alone. She drove up from her home 150 miles south to pick us up and then the 220 miles to Nashville. Stayed with her mother at the hotel, them brought us home.
Some say they are having hernia surgery or like I told people outside my family I need special urnary tract surgery that the local doctors could not preform. When you say urnary tract, end of subject.
Each of us and our family's are different. Do what you feel is best for you.

Re: What do you tell your family?
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a radical prostatectomy I was up front with them: especially with any male members of my family. I even went as far as issuing a 'Family Letter" reminding all of them to be diligent in getting their PSA on an annual basis. I did this because they too might be facing the same issues in their life down the road. I will eventaully be facing an implant -- it's written in the cards -- and at that time too I will lay the cards on the table. Just like women and breast cancer -- we men need to be proactive and look out for our brothers and dismiss any shame or ignorance associated with impotence or remedies.

Re: What do you tell your family?
I'm glad that you are sensitive about whether or not to let family members know about implant surgery. Our adult children stay in touch with with us, but we knew that a day out of the house could be glossed over. I would not lie to the children if confronted. We had to put the dog in vet boarding for the weekend and that was the problem area: Where's the dog? But all this worked out. I am recovering well from surgery on 20 Sept and no one knows. If your church receives news from hospitals of those admitted to the hospital, you may want to specify "no religious preference" and avoid letting the news out through those channels. Best wishes

One additional way to protect your privacy is when admitted to the hospital tell them you do not want it disclosed you are there. There is a place on the admission for for this.

Re: What do you tell your family?
I would not lie to my children (2 daughters and a son) or family...but i am not sharing all the detasils either. I simply told them I have a leaky vein in my reproductive system.....and that I have had the problem for many years. But in recent years it has gotten worse and become problematic. That i am having surgery to correct it. That i will only be in the hospital overnight. At some point i will tell my son about my implant in case he develops a similar problem.
