Upcoming surgery December 26th...

Well I am going to receive a Christmas present on the 26th at 6:00 am. I am scheduled to have a Titan implanted. Dr. Andrew Kramer is the surgeon at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. During the consultation he said that he prefers the Colonoplast devices over AMS but he would implant whatever I wanted if I had a preference. It seems as if a lot of the higher volume implant surgeons on the East coast use or prefer the Colonoplast models.

A lot is going through my mind. If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it. I am concerned about any post or pre operation advice that any of you may have. Has anyone had the procedure done by Dr. Kramer? My other option is to have Johns Hopkins conduct the surgery. Hopkins performed my prostatectomy and it went well. However, Hopkins does about 70 implants per year compared to over 200 per year by Dr. Kramer at the University of Maryland.

A little background from me. In Maryland, 44 years old, post prostatectomy (surgery July 19th, 2011), and very nervous on whether I have done all my homework on this new phase post prostrate cancer.

Some other thoughts... Dr. Kramer says the whole procedure takes 20 minutes. I would be able to leave the hospital the same day or stay 23 hours in the hospital if I wanted to.

I'll be about 3 hours behind you doing the same thing. So a belated Christmas gift for us both.

That timing for Dr. Kramer is lightning fast. It must not include any prep time, etc. Just be from time of first cut to time of last closure.

One thing to note, those timings can be way off depending on the conditions that present themselves during surgery. The average for the higher volume urologists around Nashville was 45 minutes, my uro quoted more like 1.5 hours after some experience with my anatomy. Time for what so far seems to be a very successful surgery was 2.5 hours due to extra work caused by old hernia repair surgery.

So the timing, is probably not real accurate.

I was implanted with the Coloplast Titan on December 13, 2007 after developing ED Post-Prostatectomy in 2004.
The Implant completely corrected my ED and restored the emotional bond with my wife.
Also, it does not at all interfere with any of my physical activities, e.g., swimming, lifting weights, bike riding, etc.

Best wishes for your surgery! I am still in the healing phase but from everything I have read and what my Urologist told me you are on the right track. I think it is best to choose the doctor with the most experience so 200/year sounds good to me. My surgeon does both the Titan and the AMS devices and he said he chooses which to use based on the patient's anatomy. I didn't ask him for further details but left the decision to him. IMO, you are best to let the doc make the decision as he has a lot of experience. My surgeon told me that he does not get different money no matter which he uses.

I was nervous about it from the time I signed up until the surgery too, so I think that is common. I went into the hospital at 8:30AM and my surgery was scheduled for 10:30AM but did not start until 12:40PM because the previous surgery in the surgery room took longer than anticipated. So be prepared for last minute changes in the time schedule.

Thanks Dave. You definitely have the clarity that I won't have until after the procedure. I am going to leave it to the surgeon as well. He says he can do either implant and stocks them both.

I am first on the table so I have to be there at 6 AM. I hope I don't have to wait long. Did you leave the same day or spend a night in the hospital?

Can I ask where and when you had the procedure?
