Traveling to/from surgery

Hey all,

Just weighing my options for implant surgery, I’m mentally ready to do it, just need to pick the doctor.

My initial idea is Dr Eid, since I’m less than 3 hours to his office and he’s the gold standard. However, I have a considerable amount of Peyronies plaque that I think needs a more intricate surgery. Eid has said that he won’t touch the plaque, but optimally, I’d like something to be done about it.

Dr. Hakky in Atlanta and Dr. Clavell in TX seem to be good choices for Peyronies and implants, but I’m curious how to handle it with regards to travel.

For those who traveled very far to see these doctors, how long were you in town? What does the follow up appointment look like? I’d hate to be stuck in a hotel or an Airbnb for 3 weeks waiting to see the doctor.

I’ll be consulting with them to talk more but just wanted to see what other guys’ experiences were. Thanks!

Dr Clavell is definitely good choice.
Look at his work on YouTube. He posted many videos with fixing different problems.
Just recently (12.2.20) he performed my revision.
I am glad I found him.

I would start with the doctor's office with questions regarding follow up care. Some discharge you the same day; others keep you overnight. My doctor did not see me again for six weeks. Others are seen sooner.

So that’s what I’m wondering about others’ experiences. Did you have to travel to your doctor? Not sure I’d want to turn around in six weeks and travel back halfway across the US.

Did everyone on this forum do an in person follow up?

I have an extreme case! I went to Turkey on a 9 hour flight during the height of COVID to be installed by Dr Andrew Kramer. Many people travel to his clinic in Baltimore, but probably this was the only time, when both he and the patient i.e. me, both travelled to the hospital. I stayed there 3 days post op and returned back on an 9 hour trip in a business class flight.Of course, I cleared this before with Dr Kramer. But I think unless you have exhausted your options to have someone who meets your bar to operate, it is not worth travelling long distance. But it is always a viable option. I think you could check with the doctor about their advice. For my follow up, I just emailed with Dr Kramer who responded quickly to address my concerns (as this was my virgin implant, I had plenty!).

To cut a long story short, I think its best to explore the nearby options. But don’t settle for someone who you are not sure about.

Kramer isn’t as close to me as Dr Eid, but still in driving distance. However, it seems like his office is closed? Or he’s moving? I sent an email on his website and am waiting to hear. I’ll call next week

I believe the follow up visit won't take place less than 2 weeks from the procedure. I would travel twice: for the implant, a 2-day hotel, and a same day return flight for the follow up visit. It worth it.

I flew from Calif to see Dr Eid, 6 hrs each way.
My schedule was:

Wed: Pre-op consult
Fri: surgery
Mon: post-op consult, and flew home.

I stayed at a hotel walking distance to Dr Eid's office. I was able to self-activate the implant when I got home, 4 days after the surgery, there was very little swelling or bruising. Dr Eid had assured me that a followup visit was very unlikely to be necessary and he was correct. The sutures were removed after two weeks by a local urgent care clinic. I will definitely go to Eid again if I need a revision.

I would look for a surgeon close to you. I was dismissed the day of surgery. But had to go to office next day for catheter removal. And again the next day for drain removal. Then a visit 1 week postop. And 2 weeks to start cycling. I made additional appointment next week because i was having issues cycling. Then i have another appointment 3 weeks after that one.
I see guys post on here about issues post surgery, which may or may not be normal. But i want my surgeon to be the one to evaluate it, not a dr in another town. There are surgeons listed on this website but there are tons more out there. If you go to coloplast.com they have physcian finder. Contact surgeons near you about your specific issues and their expierences. Guessing AMS may have same thing.
