Downtime after implant?
Downtime after implant?
I have an appointment in October with my euro and I’m going to start the discussion about implant. My question is after implant, how long before you can return to work? I drive a fork truck in a big industrial environment and it’s a pretty rough ride. We work 12 hours shifts and usually actually work 6-8 hours off and on all day. I’m 55 now and don’t think I can hold off more than a year or so. Sure I’ll still be working when the time comes. Thanks in advance for your experiences

Re: Downtime after implant?
Of course this would be something to discuss with your doctor but IMHO I'd give 2 weeks minimum to heal up

I was two weeks in bed, icing. I would recommend the same. I am in 2.5 weeks now and can move around fine, but icing is still crucial.

Re: Downtime after implant?
I went back to work two weeks after my operation. It was still difficult to sit for a little while after that. I definitely had to alternate between sitting, standing up in one place, and moving around.
From what I've read here, guys have different recovery experiences. But if you have to sit for extended time without a break and being jostled around by the truck, I suggest you try to get more than two weeks off, based on my experience.

It really depends on how you recover. I don't lift much or do anything too rigorous, I could have gone back to work day 3 or 4.

Re: Downtime after implant?
For me, sitting on anything was impossible for nearly 2 weeks. That was really the only thing I couldn’t do. I probably could have sat if forced the second week, but doubt I could do 8-12 hours if it. I tried pillows, a hemorrhoid ring nothing was comfortable. Even reclined in the passenger seat with my junk hanging over the edge wasn’t grand.
If you want to ensure the speediest recovery I’ll parrot what the others have said:
For the first week:
- lay flat as much as humanly possible
- be obsessive (but careful) with ice
- be obsessive with ibuprofen regardless of pain level. Reducing inflammation is important to fast healing. (Assuming no ulcer or kidney issues)
I did the same for the second week as well.

Also,
be obsessive about wound care. Cleanliness, Aseptic protocols, etc.
I took a third week of rest (because I had the leave time available) just to be gentle with myself. Didn't really have to, but it was easier to stay at home than sit at a desk.
