I’m having my implant done here in may and I’m trying to decide if i should have the wife drive me home or drive myself. I live 2 or 3 hours from the Bay Area where dr Karpman is doing the surgery and I will stay over night in the hospital and be released the next morning. If my wife brings me she will have to get a hotel and spend the night just to wait till the next morning to take me home, so my question is has anyone that had the infrapubic implant did you feel good enough to drive yourself home the next day?

Not positive about next day discharge, but generally the Dr/hospital or surgery center will not discharge you unless there is someone to drive you. I also don't think driving yourself would be a good idea, even the next day since drug effects linger.

As part of the healing process it is very helpful if you stay as flat as possible after the surgery. So in recovery and over night stay as flat as you can. And ask for ice packs. Same for the 3 days after surgery. For the trip home recline the seat as much as you can and place a pillow under your butt. And again bring ice packs. When you get home get flat as you can for as long as you can for the first 2 days and gradually start getting up and moving around after that. Be strict on wound care. I used dry pinto beans for ice packs. 3 bags in the freezer and rotate using them. They are heavy to form around the genitals and dry so they don't get the area wet. Nor do they freeze with sharp points like ice or frozen vegetables. So yes by all means get a driver if you can. Not doing so is just going to make for a slower more painful recovery than if you did and may even increase your chance for infection.

As the others have said its not a good idea. Generally speaking you cant drive within 24hrs of any surgery that involves a general anesthetic and for this particular surgery they will probably tell you not to drive for a few weeks, although I am not sure if there is any difference between infrapubic or penoscrotal. Aside from all that, you may not feel capable of driving yourself the next day anyway and then you are stuck with having to sort out what to do with your car that you had planned to drive home.

The least amount of physical movement you can do in those first few days immediately after surgery is what you should aim for. That applies to other things too like work around the house, mowing the lawn etc. Everyone recovers differently and there is no black and white guideline as to what you will be capable of doing by when, but if you can sort out as much as you can before surgery so that you can do as little as possible after surgery then that gives you the best chance of having a good recovery.

Check with your doctor.
I had an infrapubic with general anesthesia. Outpatient. Went home 3 hours after. Ain't no way in hell I was in any condition to drive, besides the procedure required that someone drive me home. Just reclined the passenger seat and relaxed.
FYI, This is considered major surgery.

WHY pre' tell, would you risk yourself or others, by thinking you could drive yourself following anesthesia.

If the surgery center releases you WITHOUT a dedicated driver - they need to have their licensure revoked too! C'mon, man!

I stayed overnight in the hospital. I guess I could have driven the 15 minute drive home if I HAD TOO!, but I was in no shape to comfortably drive -- especially for 3 hours. I could not sit normally for several weeks after surgery as my nut sack was huge and on fire. As everyone else has said, you will need to be as supine as possible for around 2 weeks. I cannot imagine trying to sit and drive for 3 hours the next day. I wasnt in pain, but it is really a huge amount of discomfort for the first week or two. My 2 cents is get someone to drive you home and recline the seat as far as possible for the ride home.

Just asking a question

I have to spend the night in the hospital so I would not be released just after anesthesia! I don’t know how many surgeries you have had but I’ve had multiple surgeries and I drove myself home after one of them, I was just asking as to the pain leave and I am adult enough to know when I can drive safely without endangering myself and others.

Does the hospital provide a chair that makes into a bed for your wife to stay in your room with you. USC/Keck did where I had mine done. My son has a background in the medical field and was a huge help staying with me over night. Check with the hospital to see if that is an option. Don't drive!
