Re: Smoking While Healing From Implant
I can't help but shake my head while reading your post.
You're asking if smoking creates problems while healing? Here. This is from the first article that came up on Google.
"Tobacco smokers are at significantly higher risk than non-smokers for post-surgical complications including impaired heart and lung functions, infections and delayed or impaired wound healing."
How do you not already know this?

Age , diabetes and other autoimmune diseases are far bigger factor than smoking, obviously if you smoke 2 packs a day its a problem....
Re: Smoking While Healing From Implant
I'm a type one diabetic and gave up 8 weeks prior to my op to giv my body and healing the best possible chance.
Smoking won't do you any good but IMO alcohol consumption, weight, age, diet and other conditions play a significant part as well to the healing process and infection risk.

Re: Smoking While Healing From Implant
I smoked cigarettes for 5 years in my youth. And I smoked cigars off and on since then. For my first surgery I gave up the cigars weeks before and waited for weeks after to help out. But I also increased exercise and was very strict on diet and managing other health issues. You really want to do all you can to be as healthy as possible for this. For my repair I smoked cigars up to the day before and resumed after the surgery and it went really well for healing. Again I increased exercise and was as healthy as I could be. Of course this is true with anything. But there is that anti smoking side of society these days that can be almost rabid with some. If you do a search this has been covered before and there were men who posted no change in the amount they smoked and did just fine. But then again there are men who do have trouble that have not offered and have not been asked about tobacco use. I have no information nor have I seen any information linking a bad out come (infection, slow healing, ect..) to tobacco use other than general health warnings. Up to you if you want to quit for a month or so for this or longer or shorter. If your doctor has a very low infection rate or is a lower volume doctor with a higher infection rate you might want to consider that as well. Actually a well known NY doctor has published information on infection rates being lower in his patients with diabetes and circulation problems have been suggested by him as a possible reason. If that is true then tobacco use might even have a slight benefit for lowering infection.
Good luck going forward with this.

I believe your doctor is at least a little bit wrong on that point. Studies have shown (sorry, I don' thave the studies) that smoking constricts capilllary blood flow immediately and for hours after. Lower blood flow to a healing wounnd logically leads to slower healing.
Please ask your doctor again and read the above paragraph to him and please, please, report back to us his response.

Correct - nothing good about smoking, period. I was a smoker at the time of my implant - no issues healing.
