The noise is not an indication of a defect. As with any manufactured product, slight variations due to manufacturing tolerances are possible. However you could go through a pump replacement and end up with the same noise with the new pump.
Neither pump is supposed to OR not supposed to make noise. It just happens as a result of pressurized fluid transferring through the valve block. Both pumps have the potential to make noise but the Classic (aka Genesis) pump is more prone to it. As previously mentioned, pumping force is the biggest variable in the noise levels that either pump will give off.
Both pumps move the fluid in the same fashion. Squeezing the pump bulb closes the check valve from the reservoir while the fluid is forced out to the cylinders. Release of the pump bulb closes the check valve to the cylinders and opens the valve from the reservoir to draw fluid back into the bulb so it’s ready for the next pump. They are basically identical pump mechanisms both rated at 4ml/pump fluid transfer.
The difference is in the valve blocks. The Classic has an unrestricted straight in - straight out flow. The squawk, as it’s called, is really noise radiation as a result of it’s compact size and effectiveness In transferring the fluid at a higher velocity. The OTR has the 3rd valve with crossover chamber which the fluid travels through in both directions. That adds mass to the valve body and also more resistance to the fluid flow which helps baffle the sound. It also requires more force to pump the OTR. Not by an order of magnitude but quite noticeable if you have a chance to compare both demo pumps side by side. This added resistance will also lessen the possibility, for those with weaker grip strength, to forcefully pump to levels where the noise is more likely to occur.
