New implant technology?

Postby returntocenter » Thu Apr 20, 2023 12:02 pm

Is there a place to get news about potential upcoming advances to implant technology? The last major innovation in my understanding was the introduction of the OTR button on the Coloplast Titan devices in 2012. It's been over 10 years since then. I'm hopeful something new might be coming soon, but I'm frustratingly in the dark right now.

Not that I know of other than here at FT.
One device on the drawing board right now I believe is a one-piece pump and reservoir unit. The unit will be placed under the abdomen and control the inflation and deflation via a remote-control device of some kind. No more pump bulb in the sack, or manual inflation. As long as some hacker doesn't tap into the system and give thousands of men a boner it should be a neat unit.

There is now a 3rd company offering an inflatable implant in some countries, the Rigicon Infla10 X. It is made of 4 layers of material, vs AMS implants made with 3 layers and Coloplast made with 1.

Not exactly a revolutionary advancement but nice to have competition in this space, and maybe some will like their implant more than the other 2 brands. Unfortunately it is not in America yet.

There is not much to improve in implants. For example, Coloplast already gives a lifetime guarantee, and the best surgeons have a 0.5% chance of complications. I talked with a Coloplast representative and he told me that now there are only 2 real directions for research:

1. Implants for people changing sex. However, common consumer does not really need that product
2. Attempts to add some electronics with a tritium battery to the implant. As a result, it will be cool, but years of medical tests will pass before the product. If you already have ED, then you need to set what we have now:)

I was in a participant in a study that was asking about my interests in using an implant that is Bluetooth activated over a phone app, and the device is in your stomach with nothing in your balls. During our appointment she showed me roughly how the app would work as well as several other features and the other benefits of such a device. Also wanted to hear any reasons I might not like parts of it.

I hear this is not a thing Coloplast is doing, so there won't be a bluetooth Titan but it does appear that AMS should be releasing these in several years. Someone who kinda seemed to know what he was talking about estimated that it'll be about 5 years until it's available, which may be 4 now from the time I read that.

My opinion, this seems to be a pretty major change for future implants. Think about no more cycling by pumping your balls. Just open an app and have it inflate itself. Pretty cool.

To me the blue tooth thing sounds like a potentially bad idea.

Improved digital tech is great for your iPhone or your laptop or your electric car, but I wouldn't look to it for your penis.

Do you really want something so complex with so many potential complications determining your erection?

The Tactra was an improvement of the malleable in 2018 and there has been some talk of a heat activated IPP using the same metal (nitinol) that is in the Tactra, but that and the blue-tooth possibilities are the only things I've read about.

I would prefer improvements in the weaknesses that exist in the implants already on the market. That would be in the tubing in the Coloplast or in cylinder strength or the awkward pump shape of the Boston Scientific

This topic has been discussed several times. No one seems to be able to even point at near horizon research, clinical trials etc.
As for the bluetooth idea. I'd hesitate to get something like that. Just look how quickly cell phones & computers go obsolete.
Only my opinion on this. Improvements are going to be very incremental in nature. Fine tuning if you want to call it that. My surgeon wouldn't remove a small mass in my scrotum because it would slow down the surgery. Along the lines of the "one touch" philosophy. He wants the penile area open for as short of time as possible. His infection rate is very low. Also, if your diabetic? He is interested in your A1c number. But even further, he wants your daily glucose levels to be consistently low for the few days prior to surgery. Since the A1c number is a past 90 day average. He wants no short term spikes in your glucose levels.
My best guess is that we'll see far more minor improvements than any huge changes.

If you think about the advantages of an electric pump it is really a vast improvement. As said you do not have to worry about pumping through you scrotal skin. So earlier activation is possible. And then also infection risk would reduce. Also the doctor can prevent you from inflating too early or too long. The device can be programed for the proper protocol. And earlier activation has shown to reduce size loss from surgery. Men have often asked how to hide the fact they have an implant. So no pump in the scrotum for the partner to feel is a big part of that. And the inflation on the key fob can even let you inflate while your partner is giving you oral. So the partner can think it is their skill causing the erection. Many times men and me included will cycle when we go to bed at night. I and others have posted falling asleep and waking up an hour(s) later still inflated. The program would auto deflate at the end of the time selected. Or you can deflate whenever you need. This has been going around for a long time. I did 2 studies but have not done the last 2 or so. They are working on it and doctors have been approached for trials whenever that happens if it does. As far a the worry about someone hacking the system I think of pacemakers and other devices. You don't hear at all of folks having those devices hacked so I would believe that the same would be the case for this device. I have no idea when these will be available. It has been over 7 years since I first heard of this. Battery life has had some major improvements also. As I wrote I have not participated in the last few survey's so I do not have the latest information. But we are a long way from the early electric garage door opener mishaps of the past. Cost is another issue I have no information on.
