Booking a hotel for surgery..is a bath non negotiable

Postby Captain1117 » Fri May 26, 2023 10:14 am

Hello

In post-surgery have read many of implanted guys recommend for a bath tub.

I am booking a hotel for 3 days stay after surgery. Want to make sure if the warm bath are recommended right after surgery or after few days. I will move to my own home on Day 4..have a tub at home.

Before I can finalize the hotel...wanted to make sure.

Thanks

You shouldn't bathe until the incision is fully healed. Too much risk for infection sitting in water. I was only allowed to shower until day 14.

You need to check with your doctor. One well known NYC doctor uses surgical glue and permits and recommends baths. Used to have men soak for 1/2 an hour in a tub with a cup of bleach to kill germs in the skin. Afterwards you most likely will be told to apply cold. Usually for 48 to 72 hours to reduce swelling. Then at some point heat to promote healing. Also helps soften the device. I do not take baths but my doctors instructions were to not take them or any other submersion (swimming, hot tubs, ect..) for a very long time. I was permitted to shower a few days after surgery but was instructed to avoid a direct stream from the slower on the area. It is a good idea to obtain a copy of your doctors discharge instructions ahead of time to obtain all the supplies you will need and prepare to stay as flat as possible for the first 2-3 days post op.

My dr said no bathing the first 3 days. The hot bath mainly helps with loosening the scrotum up so the pump is easier to start cycling. I used showers then a hot pad for cycling. No problems at all.
My opinion, you should be fine.

My doc suggested no baths, hot tubs or swimming for 30 days. I did everything to NOT get an infection.

Lol...yeah, when I read this topic, I was curious as to the bath part.
Yeah. no baths for a while. What Old Guy was saying about infection should give you pause on taking a bath. Check with your Dr. You don't want to end up in emergency with an infection AND have to pay for the visit.
For me, no baths for at least 3 weeks. Showers only. Your stitches should be dissolving slowly and you will find your underwear and shower littered with black things and probably wonder WTF is going on, lol (I sure as heck did)

This totally depends on the surgeon and the choice of sutures. Follow up with your surgeon and his office for post-op instructions. I did not take a single bath till now and I am closing in to 3 months after surgery.
Dr. Eid recommends baths in bathtub after 3 days as he used glue etc. to make incision water proof. His protégé Dr. Cordon who operated on me does not use the same sutures and told me not to take bathtub baths. Only showers after 48 hours and then dry your self very gently with a soft dabbing of towel around scrotum.
The hot showers after surgery (whenever allowed) will provide you a lot of relief.

I was not as clear on my reply above but the only way to want a bathtub in your hotel room was if you were soaking with bleach and wanted to do so before surgery. The bleach helps with the germs in your skin. Eid required this at one time but may have stopped when bathtubs were no longer available in the hotels. He wrote that most all infections were from the germs in the skin brought in by the patient. Some doctors used to or may still advertise a long scrub of the area to help with this. And also a alcohol prep. And special soaps help also. No touch or other methods such as additional gloves after touching the skin are also used. For the first days after surgery when you are in the hotel cold packs are used to reduce swelling. A hot bath would be the opposite of that. After you are home if you have the surgical glue and the doctor recommends it then hot baths help with the early cycling that Eid has men try to do. However most doctors have you wait a lot longer to begin cycling. With regular sutures and an exposed incision there would be a great risk of infection with a bath or hot tub. My doctor was 3 weeks and some are even 8 weeks and there have been cases of even longer to start cycling.

Like I and was posted above you need to talk to your doctor as they differ on this and sometimes a lot. You need to follow your doctors instructions for you and not another doctors instructions for someone else.

So Dr. Eid now asks his patients to wash the area with hibiclens soap for about 3-4 days right before surgery twice a day. This is suppose to help decrease build up of bacteria and help in infection prevention. With regards to ice packs, you are supposed to use them for about 72 hours after which you need to switch to a hot bath. I was advised the same protocol by Dr. Cordon (except taking a bathtub bath). From my experience of having visited 2 surgeons, I find that Dr. Eid’s protocol is very strict and detailed. He will handover you instructions which are printed and very detailed. I don’t think many surgeons would do that.

But again, every surgeon has their own protocol and that cannot be emphasised more. We can share our experiences with our surgeons but ultimately one must follow to the T instructions of their own surgeons. Use this forum to gain knowledge and ask the right questions.

Good luck!
