Smoking nicotine cigarettes before and after surgery

Postby Oren8888 » Thu Apr 24, 2025 6:46 pm

Hello everyone. Are there any men who continued to smoke tobacco/nicotine, especially after surgery? I know that nicotine causes tremendous damage, but I didn't know before the surgery how bad it was, especially for recovery and in general for the success of the procedure. Is there anyone who underwent surgery and continued to smoke tobacco/nicotine, and how did it affect them?

I had a similar experience. I was a cigar smoker. I stopped smoking for my first surgery. This was for weeks before and afterwards. For my repair I smoked cigars the day and night before my surgery and then again the evening after the surgery. I could not see any difference.

There's a lot of research that shows nicotine actually has positive health effects, it's the tars and carcinogens in smoking products that are deadly. If you can give up the smokes and go to nicotine patches or gum, you'll be much better off.

But I smoked in my ill-spent youth, I know it's easier said than done!

I saw a video about that. It seems best to stop 1 month before and after surgery.
Smoking increases infection chances because as soon as you smoke the little veins closes and healing is slower.
I'm not a doc so just telling what I've seen.

I stopped smoking cigars since 2 months and will smoke one as soon as I'm healed!
Waiting for it!

The negative effects of nicotine and smoking on wound healing and the increased infection rates has been extensively studied and is well documented. It’s not something that is in dispute.

Who cares if someone chimes in and says “I smoked and had no problems.”

If you CAN quit weeks before your surgery and stay stopped while you heal you will be better off. But we all know that it is REALLY hard to quit. If you want to quit, let your doc know and ask if there is any help available. Wellbutrin can help reduce craving when stopping. They may have other ideas as well.

And if you manage to stay stopped for a few weeks after you heal, consider making it a permanent change. You’ll add quality years to your life.
