Just finished a Wall Street Journal article on TSA practices and policies. A piece of the info might be relevant to the discussion here about flying with trimix. Reading between the lines one might safely conclude that the TSA inspectors wouldn't get very excited about a few syringes or a tiny medicine vial, especially if they look like legitimate medications. In a section focused on illegal drugs, it says:

-----------------

" 'If you're worried about illegal drugs coming into your town, don't look to the TSA to stop it.

"'TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other drugs,' the agency explains on its website. TSA spokesman Ross Feinstein notes that by federal law the agency is focused on 'potential threats to aviation and passengers.' "

"If an officer happens upon what looks like drugs in someone's bag, 'TSA refers the matter to law enforcement,' Mr. Feinstein notes. But experts say TSA officers may look the other way even when they suspect drugs are present."

--------------------

The same article says that only about 5 percent of checked bags are inspected at all.

Thanks for all of the info you guys have added. I still have a couple of months until my trip to the Caribbean's so I still have some time.
What I am thinking of is.
Take a small cooler (Costco) and ice packs (I get about 36+ hours) and my vile of TriMix and place in my check baggage with my doctors prescriptions on top of it.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Richard

I have a 2 cup stainless steel thermos that fits a narrow Spice Island spice bottle inside. I put my 2.5ml vials in the Spice Island spice bottle well sealed, with a silica get pak, and put ice and water in the thermos about 3/4 full. And I freeze that for a day or two. I've had ice 3 days later in it still. For a day trip you do not even need to pre-freeze it. On multi-day trips with access to ice I just refresh the ice.

If you can source come Caverject Impulse units. They were covered on my former Med insurance pre-Medicare (not now). I got a batch just before I went on to Medicare. They mix ionic water and crystals in the vial when used and do not need refrigeration. The liquids in carry on thing might get tricky, might need to pack in luggage. Bring your Rx sheet so if examined and questioned about vials and needles, you can explain it. There are no secrets any more.

PS: The thermos is a "klean kanteen" at kleankanteen.com, 20 oz vacuum insulated.

Taking Trimix to the Caribbean is no big deal. I fly to the Caribbean twice a year. Usually I just throw a small vial of the Trimix into a 12- or 16-ounce coffee thermos. I fill it with ice and away I go. When I first started this I pulled a TSA officer aside and explained the thermos, ice and medicine.

"No problem," he said. The thermos passed through the x-ray just fine and there no further questions. Inside the thermos the temperature remains cold until I clear customs in the Dominican Republic or wherever in the Caribbean I'm traveling.

Sometimes I would just seal the thermos tight and just throw it into my checked baggage. Never had a problem with any TSA or Custom inspections. But I stopped doing that because I feared the one-in-a-million chance my bag might be lost or stolen. Then I'd be in the DR with no juice and no way to get any until I returned to the states. That obviously would be a bummer.

Also I have a Frio. Check it out:

It's a very small case made for keeping insulin cold as you travel. It's about the size of a wallet and there is no liquid inside. I like it a lot. Sometimes I use the Frio instead of the thermos.

The bottom line is don't even fret about taking your juice with you. If you want added piece of mind regarding TSA or Customs take a copy of your prescription with you.

Good luck!
I've tried everything -- pills, injections pumps -- and now I am at the final frontier.
