Has anyone ever heard of Dr. John Mulcahy in the Birmingham

Postby hard drive » Wed Mar 05, 2014 2:26 pm

My primary Urology surgeon told me theta Dr. John Mulcahy in the Birmingham AL, is supposed to be one of the best in the world for implant surgery. In fact, this 74 year old surgeon does no other type of surgery. I'm just wondering if what my Dr. told me is all hyperbole, or is the information correct.

Well it seems he's not as well known as I was told.

Anyone?

If that close to Nashville, might I suggest you consider Dr. Douglas Milam at Vanderbilt. http://www.milamurology.com/surgical_pr ... le_implant

Thanks, I've already had the procedure, I just wanted to know if anyone had even heard of Dr. Mulcahy. I would have liked to see Dr. Milam and I've talked to him. I have to get my care from the VA and Dr. Milam isn't affiliated with the VA.

Well, I guess the lack of response answers that question.

Well here's a bit of an update. A little over a year later. The 8th or so I plant had failed. I was implanted by Dr. Mulcahy and it was not a good result for me.

The left cylinder was only half the length of my penis, it was short and fat. The right cylinder was long and skinny but still too short to reach my glans by an inch. SST syndrome was very bad. When fully pumped, my penis would point straight down at the floor (due to u requested/unwanted alteration to my suspensory ligament), and a severe bend to the left due to radically mismatched cylinders ( my implant was pieced together from 3 different implants, it was a Frankinstein device). The pump was placed on the right side of my pubic padding above the penis. It was very painful, but I got my regular VA surgeon to revise the pump, and place it correctly. He was shocked when he saw the final result.

Now that this device has failed completely, the VA. Has agreed to send me to see Dr. Milam. I saw him 2 days ago. He said much damage has been done that cannot be undone, however he can improve my condition and repair my suspensory ligament as much as possible.

New implant is scheduled for Sept. 23rd. Send prayers please.

Prayer done, Hard Drive. But I strongly recommend you see a lawyer. This sounds like malpractice.

Also, It might be a good idea to contact the company that manufactured your implant (AMS or Coloplast) and inform the company about the results of your past surgery.

I agree with KM.

I feel you will be in good hands with Milam. Good luck. Keep us posted.
It is terrible to read of results such as yours, but it is rewarding to know of those who did get repaired and an expectations of good report later from your Sept surgery.

I have considered suing but I don't have good luck with Karma, and I'm afraid (I know it's silly) it will somehow come back to bite me in the ass. I've had so many failures that I became suicidal for a long time. I don't want the stressful process of a law suit. I'm angry and depressed about the whole mess, but I'm trying to let it all go, and just keep moving forward.

My understanding is that Dr. Milam is a "Rock Star" with implants so I'm cheering up a little now that I've got a surgeon that I have confidence in. Sadly, he told me that I've become so scared, I'm going to be less than thrilled but improved compared to my last result. He seemed to be in disbelief at what he saw during the examination. I think and hope he was under-selling his skill so that I'd be less likely to have inflated expectations (pun intended).

Thanks for your prayers, I'm hopeful once again

It's even more terrible to live this nightmare. I'm greatful to finally have Dr. Milam approved by the VA, and I'm expecting ACCEPTABLE results. I won't let myself get too excited anymore because my previous experiences really let me down hard.

I'll be praying a lot between now and September. Thanks for the encouragement.
