On the basis of comments made about Doctor Douglas Milam in Nashville, I called his office on Tuesday to make an appointment to see about getting a penile implant. The woman I spoke with said he doesn't do that. I figured he got out of the surgery end and, a bit dejected, I started asking on this forum about other doctors. Someone in that thread said he'd just had an implant done by Dr. Milam, and was having a follow-up visit soon.
I called Milam's office the next day, told another woman that I wanted to see Dr. Milam to discuss a penile implant, and she said they needed to get medical records first. I said, "so he does do penile implants?". She said that yes, he does.
Fast forward to today. I called the office to see if the records had arrived. The woman, not the same as the other two, said she'd check. She asked why I wanted to see the doctor, and I said I wanted to talk to him about a penile implant. She said that he doesn't treat "penile". I said I'd read on this forum that he was doing the implant surgery, and she said that he does implants, but he doesn't treat penile. It then hit me that this woman and the other I'd spoken with didn't know what "penile" meant. I told her it was for a three-piece implant in the penis, and she said that he does that.
Just a little light moment in an otherwise serious forum.

Okay, THAT is really scary...someone working in a urological office who does not understand the word "penile". I mean, the device is commonly called an IPP, stands for Inflatable PENILE Prosthesis, for God's sake! Sounds like some serious re-education or dismissal is in order. Truly unbelievable!

that is hilarious! (and a bit disturbing!)
Good luck with whichever doctor you get in to see!

wonder how much business he has lost!
Re: Doctor doesn't treat "penile"
Not to mention the fact that for a while, word was spreading on this board that he no longer did the surgery. Don, as a patient of Dr. Milam, I would suggest you mention to him your experience with the phone calls you made to his office staff. He really needs to know what they are telling callers. I'm sure you are not the only one who has heard this.

Thanks for posting that DB. It hit me particularly hard when I saw he was not doing it any more. I've had a long struggle trying to get this done and he is the closest doctor who said he had no problem with it. Finally met my deductible so maybe can start getting things set up. Let us know how long a wait you have for an appointment and then surgery. I want to schedule as close to the end of the year as possible and still get it done this year. Thanks. d

What you described is not a good sign. I recommend going to another doctor.

From what I've read on this forum, he's one of the best. The number that I called was the hospital he works from. There's several urologists who work from the same office.
Re: Doctor doesn't treat "penile"
Dr. Milam's nurse is Mary Ann. She is top notch ask for her, she is hard to get. Send me a message if this doesn't work, good luck. His office is very well run, receptionist is always knowledgable, none of the posts about "penile" sound like his office. I have a 3 month post activation appointment with dr Milam in October. My email is hogfish57@yahoo.com
