Pain Pills

Postby Twanger » Mon Oct 12, 2015 9:29 am

When I had my knees replaced a year ago, I found Hydrocodone if taken at prescribed intervals, effectively eliminated any pain in the early tough days. Is the pain associated with this surgery less or more than knee replacement for those of you lucky enough to have had both? And was Hydro/Oxy able in like fashion to eliminate the pain?

I had total knee replacement 3 years ago.
Had a titan installed a year ago.
The pain from the knee replacement was ten times the pain from the penile. I doubt you will need any hydro oxy.
Implanted with colorplast Titan 3 years ago. Davinci radical prostatectomy 6 months ago. Very happy with the outcome of both procedures.

I had the implant done 2 weeks ago, I definitely needed the pain pills for the first week. My doctor (Dr Eid) gave me 'hydromorphon and it worked very well. Obviously some people are in more pain than others after the surgery. I had 'rotator cuff surgery several years ago and that was far more painful than the implant surgery.

Had "torn meniscus" scoped and rotator cuff cleaned out with a shoulder block. Both were more painful than the IPP for a longer period of time. IPP require meds for two weeks or so and them moved to OTC tylenol.

Note: after I woke up from IPP surgery was in a lot of pain until my meds were adjusted over the next few ours. Then no major pain just discomfort from than soreness, swelling and getting adjusted to have extra equipment in the scrotum.

My doctor last week cautioned I should expect significant pain from the surgery. "Just want you to be prepared for the worst", he said. I was already nervous about it -- now doubly so. I guess I'll have to hope the pain pills are EFFECTIVE.

This question was on one type of pain (orthopedic surgery) versus the other(IPP).
I will tell anyone who gets an IPP you will NOT be pain free, however that said it will be tolerable with meds.

You will be sore until all the swelling has gone down.
You will go "ouch" when you sit on the pump.
If you did not take a pain pill before your first activation, you will wish you had.
You will be uncomfortable when you start daily cycling as you stretch the scar tissue. No pain no gain!

It WILL be WORTH IT!

I got a PM inquiring if I was using a vacuum pump with my IPP because I am using the VED Protocol Therapy Post-Op. The following is my reply to the PM.....

The VED Protocol Therapy pre-op picks up after you are inflated. This is NOT using a vacuum pump on your IPP. Rather it is the recycling daily as outlined in the paper by Dr. Dineen. The paper said max inflation daily for an hour for three months. Dr. Cornell instructed me to cycle at least three time daily.

Dr. Dineen says he starts his patients at 9 to 12 days after the op. However other papers found most patients were not comfortable (read painful :o ) inflated that soon. One paper said the average person started the VED Protocol Therapy was 43 days. Dr. Cornell activated me at 33 days, was able to pump to the max two days later and have been going for a total of 60 minutes every since. This means I may do 30 in the morning and 30 at night, do to time constraints. Friday it will be nine weeks since my IPP op and somewhere around week 7 to 8 weeks it becomes less painful to pump to the max, i.e. the pump is flat. Since you are breaking the scar tissue you will have some discomfort for brief periods of time. You can always push the deflate button if it is to painful.

Last night I was tired, inflated to my IPP to max, I needed 15 to make my 60 minutes and set a timer. I went to sleep, timer went off and I push the button to deflate, i.e. the discomfort is not so bad I cannot sleep. It has not always been that way, in the beginning. When it got painful I would do Kegels.

It your read Dr. Dineen's paper he says the benefit is reached at three months, but from what I have heard here on FT it is more like 18 to 24 months for max growth.

So once again, I want to be clear, the VED Protocol Therapy is not using a vacuum pump on your IPP.

Thank you for clearing that up. I think using the term VED, which stands for vacuum erection device, was what was confusing me. Just about every doc I've heard about has some version of cycling protocol post surgery, just the numbers seem to change. Thanks again.

The VED Protocol Therapy is described in the paper written about the study where it was developed:
"Vacuum Preparation, Optimization of Cylinder Length and Postoperative Daily Inflation Reduces Complaints of Shortened Penile Length Following Implantation of Inflatable Penile Prosthesis*
by Tom Sellers, Martin Dineen, Emad A. Salem, Steven K. Wilson.

http://file.scirp.org/Html/3-1990021_27133.htm

I try to always say "VED Protocol Therapy" so as not to confuse the VED,i.e.Vacuum Pump alone with the Protocol Therapy developed in the above study.
