Replacement Implants

At 44, if I get an implant, I will have to have multiple surgeries in the future. I would appreciate hearing from men who have had implants fail and need to be replaced. What were the causes of failure? How long did the implants last? What were the subsequent surgeries like compared to the original? What were the results like compared to the original? Anything else I can not think of asking?

I did a lot of research everywhere and anywhere I could find it before proceeding to the next level and getting the implant. I have found they last about 20 years. I say that and will add this; Only god knows what improvements will be made down the road or 20+ years from now. In the mean while you will have had 20+ years of enjoying what you have. That peace of mind just has to be priceless.

I know it is a huge decision you must make. You can talk it over with your partner but it is really your call. You and your doctor's. Trust your best judgement and never look back. Whatever you decide will be right for you now and always. I say this not to be funny but even a brand new car needs a tire sooner or later. Nothing lasts forever! Except death and taxes!

Great advice from Hockey. I'd also add that you might want to speak with your doctor about his revisions or replacements, and how they turned out.

My doctor did a replacement the same day he did my implant. The guy was across the hall from me for the one night in the hospital. The only hard part is that they have to remove the original implant which is very much "in place" because of all the scar tissue, etc. So the operation is a bit more detailed than the original implant. It's very doable though and the guy with the replacement seemed to be no more uncomfortable than I was that first night. His original implant had been there for 22 years and he was THRILLED to be getting the LGX as a replacement to his very old-fashioned and worn out unit.

Dr Milam told me that in 8 years, 10% of implants will fail. So 90% wont fail in that time. He also said replacement is much simpler than the original implantation.
