Calling All DIABETICS

Scheduled for surgery this coming Tuesday July 10. Just wondering if did you do anything different than diets and meds and or do you have any specific problems after surgery.

My diabetes was not an issue either before or after surgery. My BG was/is well controlled with medication, diet and exercise. If you're brittle or uncontrolled the story would be different, but if your A1C is within range there should be no problem.

I am not diabetic but have dealt with may diabetics having surgery. You are not allowed to eat before surgery. For that reason they try to schedule diabetic surgeries first in the morning and then give them something to eat as soon as possible after they have awakened. It really is a non issue. Number one is watch your diet and blood sugar before and after as you should always. You can affect your healing by letting things go to hell but those are the same rules you live under anyway. Thanks guys no worries about BS or A1C which is 5.7, I guess I was more concerned with healing more than anything.

With my shoulder surgeries, the medical staff all knew of my diabetes and were in more control of my glucose than I was for the time I was in their care. Same with mu Mother while she was hospitalized.

Afterwards, be awarecthat post trauma (surgery), you will want to closely monitor yourself. Your body will react metabolically to the healing process and your exercise levels will, of course, be affected.

You seem to be doing good with you blood sugar levels. I was told to make sure my levels were kept under control or it will have a negative effect on the wound healing process.
