I don't know if Pennsylvania is different than other states, but now it's preferred that scrips for narcotics be electronically transmitted by the doctor to the pharmacy. A year ago they wanted paper scrips handed to the pharmacist. Now, electronic transmission has less chance (if any) of fraud, and can be done without you having to go to your doctor's office to get the paper scrip.

Not in Ga . Everything but pain meds are electronic. For most pain meds you must go to the dr get the paper script and habd carry it pharmacy and have id to pick it up. Tramadol may be the exception. For long term you must go to a pain mangement dr, even they are rstricted how much they can write

Someone on this thread made a comment about the pain killer Tramadol. Does anyone have experience taking it? Did it work? How does it compare to others?

Oxycodone it ain't! It is a milder pain killer. My MIL used it quite a bit. It would make her dopey if she took much but she was in her 90s. My wife tried it for her ruptured disk. Didn't do shit. Oxys were the only way to go but those only helped some. I tried them for back pain too. I found that I would have to take too many before they were starting to get effective. I don't think the side effects are worth it. But I don't really like any of that stuff. I've done Oxys when I was having a lot of kidney stone problems but otherwise for me the side effects for opioids aren't worth it. Of course, normal doses of oxy aren't real effective for stones either. IV Dilaudid given at the ER after having also taken Oxy pills works well though, if you aren't expected to sound intelligible.

Bottom line I guess is that I was unimpressed with Tramadol. If you anticipate a lot of pain I'd ask for something stronger.

I was taking Vicodin for eye strain/headaches. Doc switched me to Tramadol. It works just about as good as Vicodin and takes just as long to kick in. If I take it near bedtime I have trouble sleeping.

As per quick computer search:

"Depending upon classification system, however, synthetic substances such as Tramadol that are directly derived from the opium poppy are considered to be opiates as well. I was taking Vicodin for eye strain/headaches. Doc switched me to Tramadol. It works just about as good as Vicodin and takes just as long to kick in. If I take it near bedtime I have trouble sleeping.

A bit off topic:

My wife had a very bad eye condition. We were lucky that one of the worlds best eye specialists was nearby at The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. The eye issue was giving her horrible pain that morphed into something beyond extreme migraines. Nothing seemed to help including strong doses of tramaddol and then Oxys. Upon seeing her GP for unrelated reasons the GP he took her off the Oxy and put her on alprazolam (Xanax). !!!Miracle cure!!! At least as far as the extreme pain. Although her eye eventually healed she did lose much of her vision in the eye. The damage was irreversible.

The moral of story is that what works for one might not work for others and the specialists don't always know best. The general knowledge of an experienced GP gained through years of practice can in some instances trump the training of the highly trained specialists.
