My hardness varies with stimulation. That seems fine and normal considering that even without a shot the firmness of my cock varies with stimulation.

I think I'd try adding novelty/sex shop cock rings to the routine first because the correct (for you) ring may give you the added boost you want. The properly sized ring of proper tension worn around your dick behind the boys can in many cases give a nice boost.

After the sex act is done I take it off. The glans and urethra (corpus spongiosum) return to a non-erect state but the shaft (Corpus cavernosum) remains hard.

As far as the hardness of the penis I would note several things. I found that when it's super hard it tends to ache, Partially from the added pressure, of being tight. Also, the position can make it uncomfortable if it's too hard. Ever since I started using Trimix I found I need to use lube. Lube (for me) makes for easier penetration and reduces friction sensitivity.

Wearing the ring behind the boys also serves to reduce blood flow but not overly so. It also tends to lift the erection. I suspect that's caused by the ring pulling down on the suspensory ligament effectively making it shorter. It also puts the ring more out of the way so it's less likely to bother your partner.
