As I understand it, they can benefit in a couple of ways
For every one who comes to a linked page, a few fractions of a cent accrue to the site owner, so clicking on the link posted can raise revenue for the spammer.
If someone goes to a web site and clicks on another link, or buys something, more revenue can be generated. What you buy may be legitimate, counterfeit or non-working.
If you go to a sketchy site, you could get your identity compromised.
