Summary: Traveled with wife from FL to NYC on March 6 for surgery with Dr. Francois Eid. Stayed 5 nights at Affinia Gardens Hotel, directly across 64th St. from Manhattan Eye and Ear, the day surgery center used by Dr. Eid for his implant cases. Surgery was performed at 9:30 am Friday March 6. An 18cm Coloplast Titan, the new “zero degree” model, was inserted, with no rear tip extenders. Anesthesia was a spinal, and total surgery time was 1.5 hours. Returned home on a 2 hour 10 minute direct flight from LaGuardia. Sat on a doughnut cushion which I had purchased in advance, and highly recommend. I have had perhaps more than the normal amount of pain, swelling, and bruising, and today (March 14) is the first time I’ve felt like sitting in front of the computer to post.
Initial consult: Traveled on a 1-day turnaround in January for initial consultation with Dr. Eid. On that visit, he performed ultrasound measurements of penis and scrotum, and measured penis length and girth with injection-induced erection. He measured length at 13 to 13.5 cm, which is about an inch shorter than I used to have before prostatectomy. Also, he predicted my post-implant length would be 13 cm. Note for anyone out-of-state: Dr. Eid’s office is only about 20 minutes from LaGuardia Airport, about 30 bucks with tip via taxi.
Pre-surgery: The hotel we chose is not the cheapest of those recommended by the Doc’s office, but is by far the most convenient—a 10-minute walk from his office and directly across the street from the surgery center he uses. It’s a boutique hotel with around 80 rooms and the neighborhood has many nearby restaurants, food stores, and other shops. A subway station is a block and a half. We arrived a day earlier than necessary so we could meet some relatives for dinner and see a Broadway show that night. I figured my wife would have several miserable days taking care of me, so we might as well try to include some entertainment in the visit! The first 3 days were very cold, windy, and snowy, though no real accumulation, so the sightseeing we had planned for day 2 after arrival pretty much fell through. On that day before surgery, I had a late-afternoon appointment with Dr. Eid, which was mainly for answering any questions we had and for him to examine the bladder via cystoscope.
Surgery: Reported at 7:30 for a 9:00am surgery schedule. I’ve had quite a few day surgeries in my 74 years, and will say this center is very high quality. All members of the surgery team were impressive, and it was clear they were doing everything possible to avoid infection. Dr. Eid inserted the Coloplast Titan as mentioned above and also corrected a minor problem with Peyronie’s, which I didn’t even know I had. He had a few problems in finding the final resting place for the reservoir, given my prior hernia repairs and prostate surgery, all of which may have made my case slightly more complicated than average. I was finally discharged about 5:15 pm and cleared to head back across the street to my home for the next 3 nights.
