Reservoir placement Submuscular vs. Retzius space

Postby sambalamba » Thu Mar 13, 2025 12:16 pm

There are typically two main locations where surgeons place the penile implant reservoir: the Retzius space (inside the body cavity, near the bladder) and the submuscular space (underneath the abdominal muscles).

  • Retzius space placement is the traditional approach and is preferred in men who have not had pelvic surgeries, radiation, or scarring from procedures like prostate cancer treatment.
  • Submuscular placement involves positioning the reservoir beneath the abdominal muscles, keeping it away from vital organs. Some surgeons believe this is safer in certain cases, particularly in men with prior pelvic surgeries, but it may be more visible or palpable, especially in thinner individuals.
Would appreciate feedback on following items:

  • Which placement did your surgeon choose, and why?
  • For thinner men, was submuscular actually more visible/palpable, or did it conceal well?
  • Has anyone experienced complications with either method, such as reservoir herniation, discomfort, or auto-inflation?
55 years. Using bimix 0.4 units. Works well but inconsistent and very inconvenient. Seriously considering an implant. 6.4 inches bone pressed length to tip, 5 inches girth base, 4.5 inches girth mid-shaft.
