Re: Getting Back To Life
Vagabond:
Different docs have different views. In my opinion, some are arbitrary and some are clinical.
My doc said: no lifting more than a gallon of milk for two weeks. No sex for six weeks. (We cheated.. Surgery Jan 6, sex for Valentine’s day ) no vigorous exercise until he told me different. He had me come in after two weeks. Had me inflate and deflate (I/D). Told me to I/F twice a day until I saw him next. That was two months. After that he told me to I/D at least once a week. Told me to go back to gentle exercise.
My surgeon for my Prostatectomy said: “ Don’t do anything stupid”. That seemed like good advice. Listen to your body.
Bottom line is for the first week or so after surgery, don’t do anything that will elevate your blood pressure and contribute to swelling. Once the swelling stabilizes, return to everyday activities that make sense and don’t produce strain. As far as working out, I used the same protocol as when I hadn’t worked out for a month or so, reduce the weight, reps and intensity by 50% and start back gently. If something hurts, stop doing it for a while.
There are obviously no hard and fast rules. Numerous commentators on Franktalk offer different advice. We all heal differently, some more quickly than others.
The bottom line is give it time. Don’t rush anything. If it hurts stop. Experiment. It is different than before and you both need to learn how to deal with the “New you”.
Welcome to “bionicsville” you’ll both be glad you did!
