What happens to erectile tissue during implant surgery?

In the near future I will be speaking with a urologist about an implant. Thanks to all the information on FrankTalk, I will be armed with a lot of specific questions. However, one topic I haven't seen discussed much here is what happens to the corpus cavernosa during implant surgery? I thought that I've seen posts from guys whose doctor preserves some of the erectile tissue during implant surgery. Is that what most docs do or does it depend on the doctor? If that is done, has anyone noticed any natural engorgement even with an implant present?

AFAIK no tissue is removed. It is moved aside/displaced by a dilator which opens up space for the cylinders to be inserted.

I've been told that that corpora tissue is kind of "spongy," so it is just squished and the cylinders are put in.

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering if the doctor makes a conscious effort to preserve as much of the corporosa as possible.

There are many videos of actual implant surgery out there where you can actually watch as a surgeon explains exactly how the do the inplant surgery.

I have seen the videos and was more interested in general experiences.
I think the doctors warn that you might never get a natural erection again but there are people here who feel something.
I am young and am not sure about the cause of my severe ED so was just wondering.

I have had successful experiences with an implant for 16 years, and nowadays I get "chubs" when I wake up and when I am aroused (and the head is completely swollen those times, too). I still need the implant, though, to make it hard enough for penetration.

I agree. I frequently get aroused and it feels like I am getting an erection, until I grab hold and discover that it is just a feeling.

I am certain any implant surgeon will tell you that none of the erectile tissue in the corpus cavernosum (dual chambers one on each side of the penis)is spared and will never be even semi-functional without an implant. This tissue is NOT removed but it is like delicate webbing and is destroyed by the insertion of the cylinders. The corpus spongiosum, however, is always untouched. It is the small tube-like mass of spongy tissue surrounding the male urethra within the penis. It also flares out to include the glans or head of the penis. These still have the potential to get engorged with blood flow assuming you do not have total ED
