Questions for Dual Implant (AUS and IPP) Members

There is a reasonable likelyhood that after the failed implant surgery on 10/1/2012, I will be undergoing implant surgery on a date yet to be determined and that this surgery will be for both an AUS and an IPP. So I will be needing information on the AUS or information on where to find support information like found here for the AUS.

For those of you that saw my rather depressed posts under Surgery Scheduled 10/1/2012, I have now had a chance to have a clear headed talk with my urologist and not get the data as filtered through my wife who is not one for medical details (when she thinks I hurt, she is in pain).

Dr. Morris tried regular catheter, smaller catheter, special curved catheter none would go. He then sent up a camera and discovered an area of highly restrictive scar tissue at the bladder end of the urethra. He inspected my bladder with the camera and saw signs that it was not emptying properly (stretching marks) even though I had not detected symptoms. Therefore, he proceded to remove most of the scar tissue.

I asked him about what effect that this would have on incontinence. He stated that in his experience it most often made it worse to some degree or another and that it was medically unwise to depend on scare tissue to control incontinence because of the effects on bladder and kidneys when the bladder doesn't empty completely. He further stated that we would be monitoring the effects of the scar tissue cleanout on incontinence and if the problem went beyond easily managable that he would schedule an AUS placement at the same time that he was doing the IPP. He said that if the AUS was needed, doing it in conjunction was the best choice.

So now I need to know all I can about AUS and IPP together before the possibility becomes a reality as the IPP is sure to.

Are the two pumps different enough to be told apart? I would hate for a Hard On to turn into a P??s On.

How hard is the IPP pump to operate?

Is there as much information available on the AUS as the IPP and if so where. Dr. Morris is planning on using all AMS devices, he said he has used others but has had better outcomes and more satisfied patients when using AMS. He still plans on implanting me with an AMS 700LGX for the IPP.

On a lighter note, will we be like the batter in this old joke where a guy is at a baseball game with his girl.

As you know, with my IPP implant on 9/26, i now have both AUS and IPP implants. FYI, I first inquired about doing them together two years ago and my Urologist advised against it saying the risk of infection was measurably higher doing both at the same time. I was not ready for the IPP yet anyway and elected for the AUS by itself in Dec 2010.

The AUS has been good and has stopped my incontinence about 95%. i still have minor dripping after urination and when I cough or sneeze. Also, when I orgasm, it is quite bad. the AUS valve is smaller than the IPP valve and is place in the opposite scrotal area, so you can't confuse them at all. I find the AUS very easy to use.

One suggestion on the AUS: Go with the smallest size cuff available. My Dr. put the medium sized one in me and when I orgasm, I spurt urine. Not too appealing. I have talked to him about going back in and putting in the smaller cuff, which he said he could do after my IPP heals up. ANOTHER SURGERY - YIPPEE!

Now I wonder if these surgeons are not just racketeers and trying to milk out as many surgeries as they can. They got me by the nose (or balls!) on this for sure.

Thanks for the info Steve. Good things to know. I don't know for sure if I will need the AUS yet, that depends on how bad things are when catheter comes out from cleanup and a couple of weeks later. I like Dr. Morris here he takes the time to explain things and admits to being conservative when it comes to getting the best outcome.

Example: No pain and only minor discomfort after scar tissue clean out. I am multi-tasking at work and have been sitting most of day. Only problem is that I hate the I am going to wet my pants or I have to go feeling of a catheter. No pain medication at all since surgery and now I am not making "cherry lemonade" for the foley bag. I normally heal very fast but this is great and the no pain medication not even tylenol or ibuprofen is even better.

As I know more Steve I may take up your one to one talk offer. Good healing and hardtimes.

Thank goodness, this post has appeared to have become unneeded at this point. Much better news after catheter out than expected. Even after a day to check things out, minimal leakage. I only have leakage when I cough quite hard, and that was about where things stood before hand.

Dr. and I are both quite pleased with the results and progress. Now to reschedule for one in early November.
