what supplements post op?

Postby Matthew » Mon Sep 17, 2012 9:32 am

I have been taking things like Zinc, L-argenine, E, Fish oil, trental etc. Should any or all of these be continues post implant op? Should I wait for healing more before talking blood thinning stuff like E, Fish oil etc? Thanks again.

Beware about Zinc. Too much of it might cause prostate issue. Also L-Arginine is not recommended for more than 90 days unless advised by your doctor.
From what I've learned any supplement for the heart health is good for the penile health as well... One might think what kind of relationship there is between a dick and a heart but the fact is that both of them use some special type of tissue that is not like body muscles.
You can try to add Acetyl-L-Carnitine to your list - this is also a good supplement for the healing and scar minimizing.

You should have been given instructions from the URO pertaining your meds/suppliments. I've had several operations and everytime I was instructed to discontinue the use of "blood thinners" (Fish Oil, Asprin, etc.) for two weeks after surgery.

FYI: taking L-argenine is just fine (blood flow improver) Zinc is highly questionable unless you have a specific issue for it's use long-term.

They did tell me to discontinue blood thinners one week prior to surgery but nothing post op. I will stay away from thinners such as fish oil for a couple weeks. I cannot wait to start working out again at gym. Guess I have a few weeks to wait on that too. I usually go 4 times per week.

That's going to be a problem for me too. I do daily exercises so if I am to wait for a couple of weeks I'll likely gain some weight...

Regarding post-op supplements, my Urologist has the rule, "no aspirin, NSAIDS or anticoagulants for 10 days after surgery".

My GP doctor is very supplement oriented. My wife had a face lift a few months ago and he suggested some supplements for her
to take post surgery. She did and the doc who performed the surgery was surprised at how fast she progressed. So I
had a consult with my doc to see what he suggested for me post op. One thing he suggested for my wife applied to face lifts but
not to implant surgery. For me he suggested the following:
a. Vitamin C 600 mg three times/day
b. Zinc 50 Mg/day
c. Prolomax by Ortho Molecular Products 1 pill 3 times/day after meals
d. Truameel pills by Heel Inc. A homeopathic for pain and bruising. One to Three per day.

I am staying off all the fish oil, and similar oils and Ginkgo Biloba until 10 days post surgery per the Urologist's instructions.

I had my AMS implant surgery 3 days ago and feel pretty good. Today I was able to drive myself 20 minutes down the freeway
to the rehearsal for a chorus I sing with and rehearse for 2 hours sitting down. I am using a foam rubber seat cushion with a cut out
in the middle to minimize pressure on my scrotum. I bought this at a local drug store that specializes in such devices as it was
not available at some drugstores.

Update to the above: Today is day 12 after my surgery. My main problem during the first 4 days post surgery was my urine stream, or lack thereof. The stream was very erratic in aim and in power. Sometimes it was only a dribble. Thus it was way too erratic to hit a toilet and because I was pumped up enough so I was pointing above the horizon, it was not possible to sit on a toilet and assure it would go in. So I had to pee into the shower stall to be sure it landed somewhere that I could wash down easily. On day 5 I saw my Uro Doc and he authorized me to start using Ibuprofen for pain control. His initial instructions had been “no NSAIDS post-op”. Ibuprofen also has anti-inflammatory properties. After starting Ibuprofen the urine stream cleared up almost immediately. In addition on day 5 I started using two over the counter supplements that have anti-inflammatory properties. The first is Tumeric (Curcumin) with Meriva. My supplements doc says that the Meriva makes the Tumeric ten times more active so that is the best kind of Tumeric/Cucumin. The other one is Anatabine. I had been taking both of these before my surgery, as they have some potential to prevent heart attacks and Alzheimer’s, but stopped 2 days before surgery because of my surgeon’s orders.

I am feeling pretty good now. Most of my remaining pain is due to some hernia repair my doc did while implanting my device. Three years ago during my annual DRE he told me I had a small hernia, too small to do anything about. The next two years he said it seemed to be gone. But when he was doing my implant he saw that the opening from my scrotum to my abdomen was quite large and he was afraid the reservoir might fall out of the abdomen. So he put in some stitches to close down the opening. This caused my lower abodomen/groin to be quite tender. It is getting better but still tender to the touch.

Vitamin E is good for your skin--and therefore excellent for anyone who is healing from an incision.
