IPP Total Costs

Although I got laid off in August, I had insurance (United Healthcare) until Sept 30th and got my surgery in on Sept 26th.

Here's the cost summary:

Hospital $56,892 (insurance paid $29,000)

Surgeon $4,277

Anesthesiology $1,408

Total cost - about $62,000

I had $4,000 max out=of pocket.

I finally got my bill for the IPP surgery October 9th!

hospital- $53,000.00

Surgeon $3899.00

Humana paid hospital $18000.00 and surgeon $850.00-sucks for them but good for me. I had a $3000.00 deductable but had already paid that.

Then....for my fall the day after-another surgery and three days in the hospital-total cost was $35,000.00--so in one week I accumulated almost $100,000 thousand in medical costs--and the sad part is that without insurance, I would have been responsible for the full amount. So the $380 dollars a month I have been been paying for COBRA since May was well worth every cent I paid. I am now on employers insurance but will keep my COBRA another month until all claims are settled.

It truly is amazing how much the bills are reduced by the insurance company agreements out there, I wonder what the actual cost would be if the price of indigentservices, and of excess government paperwork, and the insurance markup were removed? I don't believe the places i am using are out to gouge the public or that their actual payments are out of line with their costs of doing business. I do feel that the price quoted to the patient is grossly inflated by insurance discount, indigent care, and government read tape.

It is amazing how the prices all come in about the same from the different areas. Here is what I just pulled in off my insurance notes.

The initial charge is what the providers wanted to charge, the allowed charge is the actual amount that my insurance would allow the provider to charge. That is it is the amount they would receive from both my insurance and myself for the item.

There are two totals, one is the overall costs incurred; the other is the costs that would have been incurred had there not been left over complications from a radical prostatectoy. There were also extra costs in the implant procedure from complications of an undescended testicle and hernia repair from my twenties. Those extra amounts were not removed. The location was a suburban medical center near Nashville, TN

Since my out of pocket limit had already been reached for us by some medical expenses for my wife, my total cost was $0. Sometimes insurance helps!
