TURP definitely NOT removal of the prostate gland. It stand for Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate. The procedure is used for BPH at the point in time where the enlarged prostate prevents evacuation of the bladder aka "can't pee" disease. Basically, the uro inserts a roto-rooter like instrument into the urethra to drill that sucker out so you can pee. I had mine done on a Monday; spent one night in the hospital and went home with a Foley catheter. I removed the catheter myself on Thursday and began almost immediately to piss, as they say, like a racehorse. I was knocking the porcelain off the bowl. Ten years later, I'm finally having a little trouble again emptying my bladder, but a recent cystoscope confirmed that the passageway of the urerthra through the prostate is not narrowed appreciably.

Antegreg,
About the TURP... and your colorful description

"Basically, the uro inserts a roto-rooter like instrument into the urethra to drill that sucker out so you can pee. ".

This might be a good time for a Teaching Moment about this. It is a common error to think that a TURP is like roto-rootering a clogged pipe. That is incorrect. The entire Urethra all the way thru remains essentially untouched .. except for an incision thru the urethra to gain access to the prostate tissue that is squeezing the urethra shut. They either snip out or ablate and remove this tissue (which also is not the true active prostatic tissue but a different more inert type). Once enough has been removed your urethra (and bladder) get some relief. The catheter protects the incision so it can heal up again.)

So that's the less gruesome details .. not that the discomfort is any easier to endure. (Never had a TURP .. removal of prostate solved that BPH problem once and for all!).

You are totally correct. But it's more fun to see the expression on men's faces when the term "roto-rooter" is used. Ha Ha Ha
