Medical tests to determine the cause of ED?
Medical tests to determine the cause of ED?
What are some medical tests that can be done to determine the cause of ED? I know they can check for other conditions such as high cholesterol or diabetes. But if these can be ruled out, are there other tests that can, say, measure the blood flow in the penis? I have heard there is a test where they inject you with something that causes an erection and can do testing then. Has anyone had any of these tests and has it been helpful? In my experience, doctors have been reluctant to do any such tests.

David,
I would suggest making an appointment wit a Urologist who specializes in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction.
He/she will probably first run a Penile Doppler Test to measure blood flow to the penis.
One cause of ED is insufficient blood flow to the penis (Arterial Insufficiency).
Another cause is venous leakage, which he/she can also test for.
Hope this is of some help.

A full panel of blood tests could reveal issues with testosterone, the pituitary, Thyroid, and other endocrinological problems.

Checks for heart disease should also be performed at the same time. There is a very high statistical correlation between ED and heart/circulatory disease.

Have experiences pretty severe ED but no idea why. Uro says treatment would be the same no matter the cause. I visit a cardiologist regularly to rule out heart issues. Frustrating not knowing why but 10 mg of Cialis let's me enjoy sex with wife

Check out the thread on "Doppler Ultrasound and Veinous Leaks." I've been thru the DUS twice and its not everything its cracked up to be. On this thread, I tell a long story about my experiences and include a link with a study about the DUS. I wish I wouldve had this info before I had the first penile doppler ultrasound.

I am a diabetic so chances are good that diabetes is the primary cause but things deteriorated over the past several years so I went to a urologist to check for a venous leak. Instead, he recommended I try Trimix first to see if that would work and it did. When I inquired whether that ment I did not have a venous leak, he responded by saying that it is possible I have a leak, but Trimix is one of the treatments he would have revommended to offset a venous leak and that by starting with Trimix, I saved a lot of money by not going through the DUS procedure.
