I appreciate the kind words you guys/y'all have shared. Thank you.

Lost Sheep wrote:You mention incontinence as a side effect of radiation. Usually incontinence is a common consequence of RP? Did you have that? I do not look forward to dealing with loss of control, leaking, dribbling, pads, etc. I have already started PT/Kegel exercises. Do you have any advice?

Currently I get minor stress incontinence, but nothing worthy of a pad or anything. When I was sick last month and coughing my lungs out I had some issues when coughing. If I lift heavy objects I will leak a tad if I don't remember to clamp my Kegel muscles but I generally remember, unless I'm rushed or fairly fatigued. When I do fairly strenuous physical work out on my property for an extended time and get pretty badly fatigued and continue strenuous working then all bets are off. At that point no one is around and no one would notice anyhow because by then here in southern Florida I'm soaked through and through with sweat. So, is my continence perfect? No, but it's not really an issue and I don't need pads.

Like most everyone I initially had pretty bad incontinence. It didn't resolve right away. Yes I did the kegel exercises. That helps. But what gave me my most improvement (after some initial recovery) was going for walks with no protection. It would force me to keep a kegel clamp on. Some serious concentration was often involved. There were times I had to hide behind a bush and times I had some mistakes. But it was the fear of a bad accident that helped me develop control. I eventually worked my way up to 4 mile walks without an accident but in the beginning a 100 yards was difficult.

I think you'll be fine. Not overnight of course, but you'll be OK. It does kinda suck there at the beginning.

Lost Sheep wrote:But people around me have noticed a change in my demeanor. So I have to acknowledge there is something going on in my psyche. I would like to think I am immune to that human trait. No such luck, I guess. So, I will just have to accept it and deal with it as best I can...as you are doing.

Yeah, it can't help but add to your general stress level.

Lost Sheep wrote:Thank you for the inspirational example you are setting for the rest of us.

I appreciate that, although I don't feel particularly inspirational.

I think it would be a good idea but Paul may feel there are enough other sites that specifically address the issue.

Well zap #24 (out of 35) is behind me. Zap 25 is tomorrow. I missed one zap the previous Friday.

I do a prison ministry thing a couple of times a year and it starts on Thursday afternoon and goes through Sunday afternoon. I did my Thursday morning zap but missed Friday so I have to make it up at the end. During the weekend we get very little sleep. We camp in an old church (air mattresses) and only get about 4 to 4.5 hrs of sleep and start the day at 4:30AM Friday through Sunday.

So, I had bad lower back pain that made things very unpleasant for me over that weekend. I don't have a good back and haven't for a long time. I have stenosis going on in my very low back. It's generally just annoying unless I've been overdoing it or lifting too much heavy stuff. I don't recall doing anything to set it off.

The zaps tend to cause some inflammation which can cause issues with bladder and or bowels. I'd had some issues so the doctor told me to take a higher dose of ibuprofen or other NSAID. I told him I already had Celebrex (celecoxib 200mg) that I took occasionally for back and knees so he told me to take that instead, daily. My primary tells me not to take it every day but the oncologist said to go ahead.

Anyhow, I went in to set up at the old church Thursday a few hours after my zap with my back already hurting some. By Friday morning I was in pretty bad shape. I took a second Celebrex and continued taking 2 a day through the weekend, (not good) but I was still in bad shape. I was thinking the zaps were causing inflammation in my already crappy back. By Sunday my back was still bad but had noticeably improved, and I think it had improved a tiny bit by Saturday. My theory was that my back was improving a bit daily as I got further away from the last zap. After Sunday I dropped back to one Celebrex daily in the evening.

So the next Wednesday I saw the oncologist (Wed. is my day to see him after my morning zap) and told him my theory. He didn't buy it saying it doesn't get the same area. I understand that most stenosis is a bit higher than mine and considering where I'm getting zapped I don't see how they could be missing my bad back area. Well he didn't think so. I sure hope he's wrong because I'd sure like to blame my back pain on something that should improve after I'm not getting zapped any more. Oh well!

Are you guys really still reading this wandering babble? Why??

Anyhow, the zaps are continuing and I can see the end in sight. They really aren't at all painful although there are some annoying side effects. But the NSAIDs do largely resolve most of those. They certainly helped with the annoyingly frequent peeing, especially at night. I've almost become family with the nurses and technicians as well as the other regulars I see every day getting zapped.

This was supposed to be just a short update, sorry.

I feel for you bldoink. This getting old crap is for the birds, ain't it? If it isn't one thing, it's another. I just had cataract surgery yesterday. Have another cystoscopy coming up Monday. Be wearing a diaper coming home from that.
Good to hear those zaps aren't terrible and the hospital staff is nice. Hang in there for those last 3!

Yeah, getting old certainly has it's down sides. But it sure beats the alternative.

But for now I'm getting happy happy! Only two zaps left! One tomorrow and the last one Sunday (schedule change for the holiday).
