If you mention where you are looking for a doctor someone may have info on a doc.
The doc I used is a high volume doc, although nowhere is that info posted. During my initial consultation he said he did 4-6 implants a week. Occasionally a second surgery day if needed because 6 was the day's limit.

They also advised me all patients now have to agree to a "concierge charge" of $5,000 that covers followup visits etc. in addtion to whatever Insurance pays. So, I decided to pass. Have several others in the S Florida area that offer PIP.

Some of this is to be expected due to how a select few drs get a cult like following. The phrase "world reknown" is a clue. If a dr gets a fan following that increases the demand for his services then the price will reflect that demand. Classic supply vs demand.
We see this in lots of professions. From the board room to the athletic field. Have a good year or two, your compensation goes up.

So I researched and found a Dr that was trained on him that practices in Dallas and does 150-175 a year and on his credentials on his website he showed he was instructed and learned his trade with Dr Perito methods. I did a 5 hour drive ea way to use this Dr. made one pre visit, the surgery visit, and the two week stitches removal and activation, so 3 trips to Dallas. Great results easy recovery. All was good then I got a letter about a year after my surgery that he had stopped practicing medicine all together. Never found out why. So do your research and find a Dr that fits your needs and your ideas on how you want to be implanted that has a reasonable amount of implant knowledge. As for me I’ll either fly or drive to Houston for my revision whenever it is needed.

Wierschem is still a practicing MD in Dallas. Maybe he doesn't do implants anymore.

A friend of mine and myself used him a few months apart and both got the same letter saying he’s out of the surgery business….. huuummm. Oh well. Still be looking to Clavel in Houston when the time comes. Just a 7 hour drive or a couple hour flight

My wife had a dr that she really liked. He closed his practice & went into some kind of hospital administration job. They can drift off into several directions.

Did you ask Dr. Shaya Taghectian if she knew any docs who do implants?
I've seen Dr. Kaplan's name on here many times as a high-volume implant surgeon. Is he not available?

I know I am biased but if you live in the Atlanta area you owe it to yourself to see Dr Tariq Hakky. He”s in the Buckhead area. I think if you post a survey using 20 doctors mentioned on this site he comes up top 3.
Hes very good.

Bigdog4all wrote:I have been reading on "Only use a high volume surgeon". How can one verify if a surgeon is a High Volume Surgeon? Yes, they may answer YES. If a surgeon does 100 or so PTs a year, how can that be verified? Is there a Google question? I don't think the doctor will share his surgery list, due to regulations. Any ideas? Just being cautious.

Great answers from other members.

To echo some of these - I would check out the AMS and Coloplast websites and you can also talk to the local reps about their experience with specific surgeon in their geography (they can easily tell you who is putting in more (>5/month) vs the guy that does maybe 2-5/year. There is a way through Medicare to search how many ED diagnoses a provider sees compared to other Urologists in the state and nationally (but to my knowledge not how many of those are implants). Regardless, someone that is seeing more ED is likely doing more surgeries. I would also look for professional memberships in Sexual Medicine Society, Society of Prosthetic Urologic Surgeons, etc and other professional review websites (vitals, webMD, google, etc). Lastly, a surgeon or office that really has it dialed in (pre-op, scheduling, post-op instructions) has invested a lot of time/energy therefore they likely are doing more implants. I personally also felt most comfortable with surgeons that worked at a prestigious hospital (for me was Mt. Sinai and UC San Diego), although there are ton of surgeons that are in private practice (Eid, Perito, etc). Most surgeons are not going to be insulted if you ask them straight up how many implants the perform in a year, month, week.
Radical Prostatectomy in 2015; failed pills, straight to Coloplast Titan in 2019 by Dr. Valenzuela in NYC, Replaced with AMS 700 CX in 2022 by Dr. Darshan Patel in San Diego, CA. Wish I jumped to an implant even before prostate cancer!

Well, the decision has been made. Surgeon chosen. Date is Thursday 2/8. My regular URO, she wis not my surgoen but will be there to hold my hand during anesthesiology. Me still nervous, however, I also have anti-nervous pills.
I have all my prescriptions fill and the OTC meds. My Meds.....OXY,s, Hydro-codon, Relaxant pills, Antibiotics, Ibuprofen 800, & Tylenol Extra Strength. Also got 4 bags of peas (to be used frozen), 4 official Chiro Ice packs, extra biker shorts, Colox & Maalox, extra batteries for the TV remote, and plenty of soups for food. Even got Depends, should I need them.

Now questions......
1. I have the option to stay overnight at the hospital.....I chose to stay. Just to be on the safe side. Was that a wise choice?
2. From all you experience folks.....Did I leave off any meds or anything?
3. What did I overlook.....anything?

Another thing.....I have been practicing how to get out of bed. When I get out of bed, my nuts rub against the edge of the mattress. There is no way that can happen when my nuts swell and be painful. Trying to find a way to get out of bed without nuts rubbing.
