MRI refusal with implant

Postby newbie443 » Mon Jun 03, 2024 2:36 pm

My card and web info lists my implant is good to 3.0 tesla. But the MRI guys say they won't do an MRI of my pancreas. One of my doctors said that the 3.0 setting has results that are grainy. So they say I have to have a CT. But the CT will not look inside my pancreas for cancer. Anyone else had trouble with MRI's with an Implant?

I have had a head MRI at the same place in the past. I think they want to do a whole abdominal scan that may get a lot closer if not include my implant. The head MRI was a lot farther away.

I was at first turned down for a back MRI because of the implant.

Luckily, UCLA got a hold of their people and green lighted me for an MRI.

I have had Resonances in extremities and there are no security problems, which is what the card refers to.
As they explained to me, for other closer areas they need to know it to make adjustments to the equipment, but not that they couldn't be done.
Maybe you have to look for other more experienced radiologists, there is a lot of misinformation about this.

They are saying it could be done at the lower setting but it would be grainy and not show what was needed, My right side head of my pancreas is swollen and has closed off both the pancreas duct and the liver and gallbladder duct. The back up into my liver is so bad the ducts up in the liver are budging. Been in the hospital all weekend while my hospital assigned doctor has been fighting trying to get the MRI. Looks like the MRI folk's won and won't do an MRI. Things are really busy, and staffing is a problem also with long waits for MRI's. I think the MRI person just does not want to do mine for some reason and fought to exclude me. In the swollen head of my pancreas is an area that they want to look at that is pressing on the ducts and causing my problems.

Been in the hospital since Thursday morning and am not feeling well now. I was feeling better when i started this thread.

Sorry newbie to hear about this issue. My prayers for you to get well soon. I hope your doctor can get the scan done for you at a different hospital. It is necessary to get a second opinion of a radiologist.
Also, I see some members here had and or going to have MRI on the implant itself (Frank66665) post. If the MRI is possible on the implant itself, why this radiologist say it can't be done nearby an implant?

Thank you for the well wishes. I will try to call Boston Scientific today and see if they can help. Just was able to connect to the internet. I have Medicare with part G so I can go anywhere that takes Medicare and have no networks to stay in. And I know Surgeo has self-pay MRI's also. Not in my home state of Kansas though. Seems like insurance companies have KS locked down tight. Dalas is just 6 hours and Tulsa is even closer. KC is the closest.

Well I guess this is a non-issue now. Doctor came in this morning and gave me the upcoming schedule. Endo today to open the ducts. An outpatient endo to do a special ultrasound of the growth with a probe up in the ducts next to it. Oncologist is being brought in and I will see one sometime. Then some type of biopsy to nail the lid on it. I don't think an MRI will change anything other than it would stop the second endo.

It is good that they could manage to check it by endo and biopsy. I hope it is not a serious issue. Let us know how it goes.
