Looking for the right doctor
Looking for the right doctor
I had prostrate cancer 10 years ago. Cialis and Viagra worked for a number of years, but then had to go to Trimix shots several years ago. About a year after starting shots I developed peyronies so now I’m looking for a doctor to do implant. Dr Clavell out of Houston comes highly recommended. My current urologist recommended Dr Allen Morey. Has anyone used him since he left UT Southwest and moved to McKinney?

Would highly consider Dr. Petar Bajic, The Cleveland Clinic …One of the great young surgeons that a lot of folks will talking about in the near future … RP 4 years ago and implanted close to a year ago and extremely satisfied with my implant ….. Post-op care and follow up by NP and staff is Gold Standard
Re: Looking for the right doctor
Narrow it down to 3, then have a consultation with each. Bedside manner, communication, patience with your questions and demeanor should not be overlooked.
There's a surgeon within an hour of me that many people recommended. His reviews were mixed, mostly due to him not being overly friendly and a little abrupt. I decided that I didn't really care about the man's attitude, more about his aptitude. Then I called into his office and was treated poorly by his staff and realized I cared a lot about that, and his staff had likely taken on his attitude towards patient care. He never heard from me again.
I consulted with my Kaiser urologist. After 15 minutes with him and asking him what his thoughts were in regard to maximizing the outcome, I knew he was not the guy. He held out my penis and said "this is what you'll likely be like after surgery". For that, I wouldn't have even bothered to have the implant. He said he leans towards undersizing to make sure there was no erosion. Not the doc I want!
I paid out of pocket and traveled 2000 miles to Dr. Clavell, his staff was very easy to work with, caring and thorough. This is not a surgery that you shop price on. After I consulted with Dr. Clavell in person I knew he was the guy I wanted to cut my penis open and shove in some looooong rubber hoses. Everybody is different, but no catheter and excellent pain management regimen was something I valued highly from Dr. Clavell. I took nothing more than Advil and Tylenol and had a very comfortable surgery and recovery.
Good luck to you, it's a big step to take but worth it 100x over.

I like clavell alot, he gave me his cell, i have texted him multiple times over the last year, mainly with updates, last one was a year later. He always responded and was who i met in person, kind and smart.
I agree with pick 3 and do a consultation with each.

Re: Looking for the right doctor
Appreciate all the information y’all have given me on this. Clavell is the number one on my list. his office is supposed to contact me after their new offices opens to set up an appointment in August. I have noticed that he’s got some new ideas for dealing with Peroni’s disease when doing the implants and I like his minimal pain in recovery with the cocktail that he uses for pain management. Going to keep my appointment with Dr. Morey in August. When he was at UT he was considered a high volume surgeon with a 98% success rate. From 2020 and back, you could find him talked about quite a bit on the form here but nothing since.

Hi Drew0321
Dr. Morey is implanting my AMS CX with Tenacio pump this Tuesday 7/23/24! I will keep you posted how it goes but everything leading up to this point has been great. Insurance has been the main issue, but that is all good now.
Main reason to go with Dr. Morey for me was I wanted a high volume doctor that came recommended on FT that is within driving distance and accepts my insurance. If you do much searching on FT - the only time Dr. Morey has not come recommended is when it was one of his students doing the work! That part took care of itself when he left UT Southwest. So I don't have to worry about a student doing the work. He told me my last visit he has done over 2000 personally and averaging 5-7 a week currently - so I feel I am in good hands and he is one of the few doctors that Boston Scientific approved for the new Tenacio pump. He also a Center of Excellence of course due to his volume success rate.
I feel good about Dr. Morey but I definitely would have talked to Clavell if he was closer since he seems to be recommended more often on FT and his YT channel is a big help to understand all this and get to know him.
One thing to note and not sure how much you know about various ways to do this procedure, but Dr. Morey uses penoscrotal technique with a separate incision in lower abdomen for reservoir. There are pros and cons from what I have read on penoscrotal vs infrapubic. Dr. Morey said that the small extra incision for the reservoir was so he could pinpoint and place the reservoir exactly where he wanted based on the patients anatomy and he used penoscrotal to be able to place pump exactly where he wants it with less risk of it moving to a bad location or up out of reach.
Bottom line - Morey or Clavell or some other Center of Excellence high volume doctor will be great!
I will try to update you later next week when I am laying around recovering...

Drew:
I’m guessing based on the fact that you are looking at docs in Texas that you live in Texas. Thus let me offer you congrats from a fellow Texan for remaining cancer free and wish you continued good health.
I am in a small town of 700. The nearest small hospital is 15 miles. The nearest large hospital is 45 miles (Killeen). The nearest large hospitals where I would actually let them cut me open are in Temple (68 miles) or Austin (80 miles). Houston is roughly 220 miles and Dallas us 170 miles.
I got excellent work from Austin’s high volume implant guy. If I had to get a revision my first call would be to him and my next call would be to Clavell. Then I would think. I’ve learned a few things since I’ve been bionic - most of what I’ve learned was just how good a job my doctor did - but we all have anatomical peculiarities that drive the train on what they install and how they install it.
We all have priorities. One of mine is service after the sale. That’s why going to Austin instead of Houston worked out for me. That’s why I’d be inclined to get a revision in Austin but before I make that decision I want to know what the doctor has planned. Typically guys go up 2 or 3 cm on revision surgeries and I’m at the limit for what can be done with a 18 cm LGX.
On a different thread a young man was encouraged to take the 3 doctor approach. Go see each of the doctors you are considering. I’m the last person on earth to advocate wasting money on unnecessary doctor consult visits. But when they’re cutting on your manhood and setting you up with a path to be a sexual being for the next 10 or 20 years, getting the right doctor makes it worth it. Truth be known, there’s a lot of guys who could perform the operation but the main thing you want to do is convince yourself that you’ve done everything you could to guarantee a successful outcome. Only way to do that is evaluate.
I had to drive 80 miles to see the doctor but. As you know, in rural Texas that’s considered no big deal. What stands out in my journey to being bionic was the willingness by the doctor and his staff to let me come back to the clinic any time, put me in an exam room, have the PA or nurse supervise me and coach me as I learned to operate this thing. On each visit the doctor would stick his head in, admire his handiwork, reassure me that everything I was seeing that might be scary was normal and would be healed over time.
Some guys are perfectly good with meeting a doctor twice - once in a presurgical consult and then on the operating table. Then they fly away home and what’s done is done. I wasn’t one of those guys. I wanted a doctor close enough I could see in person if things didn’t go well and someone who could see what was happening and judge whether it was normal or not.
In retrospect the best thing about my bionic experience wasn’t the doctor-although I really like the guy and cannot fault in any way his surgical skill. What made the whole thing into a great experience was his staff. They gave off vibes during my visit that my case was their total focus and they were standing by me to make sure I was healed up and happy with the outcome. In this new modern age of assembly line medicine that was a refreshing change. I can’t say everyone has the same experience. I’m retired Army and have never been shy about expressing my expectations. The deal here was my expectations were met.
Shopping around and talking to several different surgeons/practices just seems wise to me. Regardless, I hope you find someone you like and trust and that your outcome is as good as mine.

Age 68. Physically fit educated red neck in Texas. Very married. 23 cm (18+5) of LGX installed by Dr. Bryan Kansas 12/31/2019. I fought the ED and my wife & I won. I’m either full of shit or sound advice. You decide which.

Re: Looking for the right doctor
Being from the northeast Oklahoma area, I researched Urologists in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri who had installed implants for many years and were recommended on this site. I read hundreds of reviews and made my final decision of Dr. Charles Pritchard practicing out of Tulsa, OK. He has a very, very low infection rate and is a straight shooter with a good bedside manner.
My surgery was a little over a year ago and it is very successful. My pain was controlled by Ibuprofen and in 3-4 months I was feeling 100% normal sensation. My wife and I love the implant, and my size is actually a 1/4" longer than before. A win-win for me and my wife.

I highly recommend Dr. Clavell. A gem of a doctor.
Re: Looking for the right doctor
I think Drew saw Dr Morey and maybe had his implant done 7/23/2024. Following this thread isn’t crystal clear.
Today is 7/25/2024.
Please post details of your procedure and how you progress going forward.
I’m consulting with Dr Morey 7/30/2024 and very much want to know how your surgery went.
After reviewing this thread again, I think TruthEdge had implant done by Dr Morey on 7/23/2024.
Details from one or both of you will be greatly appreciated.
