Traveling for Implant Surgery

Postby Implant2025 » Mon Dec 30, 2024 2:34 pm

I live in DC but will be traveling to Houston for my IPP surgery with Dr Clavell. If you've traveled to him for surgery, or traveled to be treated by other docs I'd like to hear about your experience.

I traveled from DC to Dr Eid in NYC. Definitely not ideal and makes follow up appointments difficult but better than going with an inexperienced surgeon

I drove to Houston for Dr. Clavell to do my surgery 6 weeks ago. I only live 3 hours away and Dr. Clavell said it would be okay for me to do so.

I stayed at Home2 Suites by Hilton Houston Medical Center, TX which is less than a mile from HCA Medical Center where the surgeries are performed. Pretty nice restaurant in the lobby plus snacks that can be purchased. My suite had a full kitchen, but I only used the microwave for the Domino's Pizza I picked up.

Within 30 days of surgery, Dr. Clavell wants a EKG and blood work completed for clearance by him and HCA Medical Center.

The day before I arrived I went to the hospital to check in and complete any paper work that needed to be done. I also paid the Hospital their fee since I was self pay. After that, I was told what time to be at the hospital the next morning and not to eat after a certain time.

The next morning bright and early, I ubered to the hospital, checked in and once they were ready I went to the pre-op area, gowned up, got IV access and then met with Dr. Clavell for any more questions, then with the Nurse Anesthetist for her check list and then she gave some meds through my IV.

About 15 minutes later, they came and got me and wheeled me to the OR. Last thing I remember was going through the doors into the OR and then waking up in the surgical recovery area.

Had to hang out until I could urinate prior to being discharged which I couldn't do, so I got cathed to empty my bladder and to get it working again.

After that, I ubered back to the hotel at about 3pm and hit the sack a couple of hours later. The following morning at about 3am I woke up, got dressed, checked out and then drove back home.

And tomorrow, I am Houston bound for my 6 week follow up with Dr. Clavell to check me over and show how to deflate and inflate, then back home and start cycling.

Dr. Clavell has a really good YouTube channel. that also goes over pretty much everything about the process of the implant journey.

@Taggart423:

How does your stretched penis length now compare to before surgery?
What was your recovery like - how long till the pain subsided and you could become active again?
Did you use a vacuum pump before/after surgery?
How soon after surgery could you point your penis up with compression shorts etc instead of down?

After an implant there basically isn't a stretched penis lenght to compare to pre surgery. Most IPP's turn you into a "shower" vs a "grower". So even if you compare your flacid length it isn't much of a comparision. Example, my flacid is almost 4cm longer than my penis stretch test.

Dude ....

Traveled from Tokyo to Houston, during the end of Covid. Was concerned about the trip, but no issues other than after arrival from Houston back to Tokyo (recall it was a 12 hour trip) it took over two hours to leave the Narita airport due to Covid paperwork. That said, all good. Had doctors from St. Luke's Hospital, Tokyo monitored me in case of infection. Doctors here were overly cautious, which I was fine with. Clavell was in touch with me every step of the way via text.

The minor difficulties I had in the beginning were 1. needed a catheter to urinate and 2. difficulty deflating the Titan. That said being an x-pat, I have something of an adventurous spirit and welcome the challenge.

When you see the doc, tell him Tokyo Jon says hi.

To the left of this page is an ad for the Penile Implant Institute of Greater Washington. Had I had that close to me I would not have traveled for my surgery. Follow up care can be very important and the extra cost to travel and lodging away from home would not have been worth it for me. Just my own opinion on this.

Travelling that far would keep me from doing follow ups, which are important. It's tough to find surgeons who do penile implants but there are many good ones all around. Check with a local urology clinic, maybe a doc close to home can be found.

Cant really compare pre implant surgery size to now due to my flaccid penis being 2-3 inches longer than before. VED before surgery was 7 inches. Now after surgery I am at 6 1/2 inches with a girth of right at 5 inches. I have definitely become a shower vs. a grower and the ladies definitely take notice the few time I went to the grocery store with it partially inflated. Haha
I have had a great recovery. pretty minimal pain mainly at the tips and my lower abdomen with the reservoir placement, 5/10 scale the first couple of weeks with only OTC Tylenol and Advil to take care of it. Completely pain free at the end of week 4 into 5 and did not have to take any narcotics.
VED used for a couple of months prior to surgery, none after.
I was able to point my penis up 2 days after surgery with a little bit of pain. But like Dr. Clavell said in one of his videos, I just let it hang while at the house. I did point it up in my sepratech underwear at night when I slept with the baby sock on the glans due to sensitivity.

Hope this helps.
