My implant story

Postby Bubba54 » Sat Nov 22, 2014 7:59 am

I had a radical prostatectomy, in 2010, at the age of 49 and have been cancer free since. As to the ED, one of the first things we tried was a VED, but just didn’t work very well for us. I also had no response to ED meds. When there was no natural recovery, I started to use injection. The injections worked, in time I developed peyronies disease, and was advised to quit injections.

Time got away from me, always hoping for some kind of natural recovery. I found this site through another support group site Healingwell.com, and decided on an implant. I decided to go with DR. Andrew Kramer, at the University of Maryland Medical Center..
As it turns out, my insurance company won’t pay for the procedure, even with appeals they won’t cover the expense. The procedure cost $20,000.00 plus about another $1000.00 for flight and hotel.

The wife and I Flew from Missouri, visited with Dr. Kramer at the clinic on August 26, and had the procedure the following day. The peyronies caused a 90 degree upward turn, and I was implanted with an AMS 700 cxr. They kept me overnight and released me the next day. We stayed overnight at the hotel and flew back home the next morning. The flight wasn’t very comfortable but manageable. I used the pain meds for the first three nights; I just couldn’t get comfortable to sleep.

I took three weeks’ vacation from work. When I got back to work, I told everyone I was down in the back and stayed away from any heavy lifting, for a while.
A couple of days before my fourth week, I contacted Dr. Kramer about pump activation. He described the pump activation, and I started pumping that day. We had intercourse later that week for the first time, a little sore, but I’m sure that is usual for about 4 weeks. At 12 weeks things just continue to get better, and like many, I wish I would have done something a lot sooner.

Dr. Kramer said that I would probably still have about a 10 degree curve, but it is very slight and poses no problems. As for size, between the prostate surgery and the peyronies, I have lost about two inches in length. What I have now is 4 to 4.5 inches that works fine.

I can’t say enough about Dr. Kramer and his staff, I found him as so many have described. He has the best bed side manner of any doctor I have ever seen.

Thanks for all the help and advice I’ve gotten from this site.

Bubba,

Your experience sounds quite similar to mine in 2008, with the exception that the driving time from my house to UMMC is about 25 minutes, so I didn't have to deal with hotel and flight. My discomfort was pretty much as you describe - I was comfortable with Tylenol and ice packs for the first few days. I had less Peyronies than you, and the implant corrected it 100%. Also, you got activated quite a bit sooner than I did (and due to life circumstances we have never used the implant) but I agree about Dr. Kramer - his manner, expertise and skill are tops.

My cost in 2008 was about $17,500, so your more recent price sounds about right. I'm amazed at the cost of some implants that have been described here - $50K to $75K are astonishing. As with anything else, it pays to shop around.

Good to hear another success story!

Dave Dr Reed wants to activate the device when he takes the stitches out. He admits it's going to hurt! Is this a little early? He had various reasons for doing it this early. By the way Dr Reed showed me what he "said" he had to pay for the four parts. A little over 10k. These things are not cheap!! Also has anyone had their pump anchored with stitches? I am assuming dissolvable ones.

As I recall, the device cost for my Titan was something like $7,000 - you're right, they are not cheap. But they cost a lot to make and they don't sell like hotcakes so I imagine they have to charge a lot in order to stay in business. It's been several years, and I don't recall exactly when mine was activated - seems to me it was about 4-5 weeks. And it does hurt at first, but that gets better pretty quickly. It takes a while for your boys to get used to their new brother, and for everything in there to settle down.

I crawled out of the hotel the morning of day five in excruciating pain. We all are given what we can handle I guess. Part of the suffering of life I commonly refer to.

It's amazing how your first time back in the saddle quickly takes away most of your thoughts about the first 10 days and what you went through. Even in week 7 still get a little wet in the eyes if that slippery beggar pops out of my grip but the hard on and what you are now able to do with it quickly has you thinking what the fuck ! this is what I did it for and its working. So guys just soldier on the goodies are close at hand and I'm not talking hand job!
It's amazing how many of us with all our pain still had to have a good wank in the first week but shit it felt so good to release a load.
Hold on boys you are almost there
Cheers from downunder

Dave, Thanks

Purrboat,
Hang in there, just need to get a little more time under your belt. For me, at about day 8 or 9 I felt I turned the corner and things continue to get better by the day. I do recall the doctor saying give it 6 to 8 months before full benefit.

Zac white,
I too, took matters in hand the first week; it was great to know that things still work with no loss of sensation.

Thanks Bubba

Dr Paul Perito in Coral Gables is a high-volume implant surgeon and has an excellent reputation
