Well, with the injections now failing and leaving me with a shrunken, curved penis, I'm thinking about an implant. I have been talking to the VA about approving the surgery and they said if it's approved, it would be paid for by them but performed by an outside doctor. They don't do surgery anymore at my VA hospital.

I don't have the insurance or cash to see several outside doctors to get other opinions. I remember having ED when I was in my 20's (once in awhile), but it has been serious for about 12 years. I'm 46 now. I am about 80 lbs overweight, I have type 2 diabetes and i'm on heart pills, cholesterol pills and blood pressure pills. 5 years ago, viagra worked like a charm. I was very happy and my girl was very happy. Then, it stopped working. (around the time i became diabetic and started taking all of the meds.)

A couple of months ago I had to travel for work and i stopped taking my meds regularly and would miss several days in a row for several weeks. During that time, I would get morning arousal, not quite wood but something was definitely going on there. Also, when a cute girl would walk by, I would get a semi erection. Now, because of the injections and the diabetes, my penis has shrunk drastically and it won't get erect no matter what. But, these arousals were new for me because I hadn't had them in years.

I have a family member who is a health nut and eats only natural and organic. He believes that if I could get off the meds, lose weight and be healthier overall, my erections would come back. He believes this 100%. My problem is, i've been overweight about 20 years and i've tried to be healthier but it hasn't happened.

1.) Should I make an all out attempt to lose the weight, get off the meds and see what happens?
2.) Should I pursue the implant path?
3.) Should I seek counsel from other doctors?

I know the decision is mine, i'm not looking for people to tell me what to do. But the VA doctors have said that they believe the implant is the only option. I saw a specialist in a men's clinic 6 months ago and his tri-mix didn't work and it caused more shrinkage problems for me. I just don't want to have the implant with out exploring all of the options, but I don't believe I have the willpower to lose the weight and get off the meds. I also don't have the money to pay specialists to give me other opinions.

I haven't had intercourse in 5 years or so. Obviously, I can't date and have a girlfriend right now because of ED and that has caused me depression and mood problems. But, I don't want to rush and do the implant and end up regretting it.

anyone with similar problems or advice?

Hey Rockstar68, I can relate to your circumstance, I am 52, over weight, on BP meds, and will be using the VA assistance. The good news is the, VA does cover it as long as your ED has been documented. (Remember the loophole is you have to find a Dr that takes the VA insurance) I started using the blue pills when was in my 30's then switch to cock rings, then pumps, my next step would have been injections but I decided to go with an IPP instead. I sought a second opinion from outside my area and am satisfied with my decision to proceed with the IPP. As far as my weight gain, I can honestly tell you it was all been based on low self-esteem. Once I lost my "Man Card" I told myself what's the use of staying healthy, I might as well enjoy the next best thing.... Food! Everyone will probably agree that's it will be better for your body to loose the weight but will the IPP improve the self-esteem and motivation ?
Bottom line is only you can make the big decision.

1.) Definitely
2.) If you don't notice an improvement after losing weight, you should definitely consider an implant.
3.) I highly recommend going with a high volume doctor. A lot of us here can make recommendations based on which state you live in.

I am basically in the same boat
Tri-mix did not work. They told me 80 - 90% chance it would work. That hurt.
Trying to lose about 20 lbs.doctor does not think that is problem

Ur appear like none deal with it as a major part of practice they just filling in.
The last guy I saw I was told specializes in that are. Told him what was going on. He then asked me what other urologist told me to do. I told him I wanted a 2nd opinion. Then he asked me the name of my Dr. Also what I paid for a bottle of Tri-mix. I asked him what did that matter.
He insisted that everything was confidential and went back to asking me the other Dr's recommended treatment.
I got ticked off so he then went back to what I paid for Tri-mix. I admit I got ticked off and told him to forget the inquiry and asked him for his recomedations after las he went to Md school.
I got up thanked him as sarcastically as I could and walked out. Have been to probably hundreds of Dr appointments. Taken elderly relatives to Dr's. This was a first for me. I can not wait till the hospital sends me my customer satisfaction response.
