Safety device experience today. Read and share

Postby alibaba » Sun May 29, 2016 10:53 pm

A lesson. Safety devices are made for a reason. One of my peeves is people disabling the seat safety switch on riding mowers that shut it down if your butt comes off the seat. Today it proved a lifesaver. I heard a shrieking noise and thought maybe my wife had run over a rabbit's nest. Rabbits shriek when a hawk gets them or injured. The shrieking did not stop which I thought odd and then I realized rabbits are a higher pitch. I headed over to see what the issue was then started to run the more I thought about it. My wife had backed up to get closer to a tree and a low limb ( large one so it was not going to break) had caught the back of her seat, folded the seat and her over the steering wheel and had her pinned or nearly crushed I guess. Fortunately when it lifted her ass out of the seat it killed the engine and stopped it. She wouldn't have been able to scream much longer because she could not breath pinned like she was. If the seat switch had been disabled it would have been a very bad if not fatal situation. 23 horsepower diesel would not have stopped if the kill switch had not worked. She could not lift her foot off the reverse peddle pinned like that. Very bruised, sore and going to feel it more tomorrow but hopefully no internal injury. Please people, do not disable safety devices. They are not there just for rotating blades and to sell parts. ear before last I had replace her switch with a new one. Fortunately I was able to keep a cool head, shut off the deck switch, start the mower and ease it forward to get her free and have a supply of oxygen bottles on hand. Thinking about what could have happened after I had her free was tough. Safety devices are there for a reason. A temporary fix might seem like a smart quick fix to some people but from what I have seen the quick fixes usually are their final fix and in a situation like this a quick fix solution could have been a fatal one. d

Total agreement, alibaba. I'm sure there are quite a few stories about people being saved by safety devices.

Hi The easy way out of that problem is to have a push along then you are in charge and not a machine or any gadgets, that way anything goes wrong its all down to your brain.
Our house here in Greece sits on around an acre, I do it all by hand, just think of the exercise I get, and that is a lot healthier for you and me, gets you heart working and helps with blood problems by getting it going round and working harder, do this its better for your erections, and the reason we are all here, you got it, erections.
So dump you sit on and get back to a real mower, there so safer.

Even push mowers have safety devices that should not be disabled. We mow 6 acres of yard on our 13 acre lot plus I mow 15 ft wide of shoulder on each side of the farm property for 1 mile on each side of the road. One must maintain minimum standards and I cannot ask a 65 year old woman who likes to mow under the trees and around flower beds to push.

With that amount in Greece and the UK its all done with a tractor with a slasher on the back, and not on some dinky toy of a mower even if its a sit on its still to bigger job, and any low boughs on trees should all be cut down for shear safety, anything on my olive tree in our grove are all gone, which my tractor driver has thanked me for when he slashs my grove.
Safety starts before you get on anything.

No dinky toy. Commercial mower here. Thank you for your concern.

Sounds like a John Deere Mower with the 23 horsepower Yanmar Diesel that goes also in the Gator like I have. That mower is far from a toy or rinky dink play thing. And--like said, when you have grass growing like crazy in the spring, and I do have 6 acres I mow And care for around my large yard, I would be dead of exhaustion from pushing a mower on 6 acres, and no erections would be possible that way either. Glad your wife is sensible and able to run a mower like that, she made an error, but probably won't ever again--not that one anyhow.

We tried the John Deere when they first came out but found they could match the efficiency of the Toro 223D front deck mowers with a 72" deck though like all John Deere machines, they drove like a dream. 2 of our neighbors have Yanmar Deere. We have 4) 223D's. At one time the dealer had a program where we could buy a Toro commercial mower at cost if we bought a new planter. It cut the cost from $23,000 to $17,000. In those days I had the money so why not? I had posted a fairly long post describing the yard and equipment we use but being that ruffled some feathers here that I should quit bragging about my rich ass estate, sell some of it and go pay for an implant revision so I deleted it. She or I have mowed around that same tree for decades. Every day humans make mistakes and she tried to back up and get a little closer. Tried to post a picture but FT said file size was too big and I've no idea how to resize it. We have a Toro Workman 3300 diesel which has similar characteristics to your Gator. Both very handy and hold good value.

My wife had never mowed until the mid to late 80's but now insists on mowing 1/2 the yard. Her mower has the most hours and I tried to sell it a few years ago and she refused. I sold a nice 4x4 328D I had bought to replace it instead because she wanted to the one she always uses. Having been raised in the big cities of New York and St. Louis it took a while but now she loves to spend more time out in the yard than inside. Thousands of flowers, shrubs, azaleas and such keep her happy along with a well manicured yard big enough traffic cannot see the house. You know how nice a happy wife is!
