The primary reason the other components are in Trimix is to reduce/counteract the painful side effects of PGE-1. Your doctor can adjust the mix in order to offset the pain. If the Caverject continues to cause pain, I would definitely consider switching.

Jim:
The pain I experienced was much worse than the kind you're talking about. At its worst I couldn't even touch it lightly without without causing almost unbearable pain. The discomfort extended down into the perineum area and to the buttocks making it uncomfortable even sit or lie down. I'm almost positive after 2 similar sessions like this that Alprostadil (Caverject) is not for me. I was hoping I wouldn't be one of the 35% or so that have pain with this drug because I like the reduced risk of Priapism and fibrosis with it. (And the fact that insurance paid for it)
The wife and I will be going away on a little getaway to Blowing Rock, NC on Saturday-too bad there's not enough time to get the new prescription and get it fine tuned in time for the trip.

dtwarren:
After 2 very painful sessions I won't be giving it another try in case it might not cause pain again. After I get back into town I'll definitely be giving my doc a call to get a new prescription.

Thanks,

Steve

I was finally able to get a prescription for something other than the very painful Alprostadil. It took almost 3 weeks to of calls and emails to get some attention from my Urology team, but that's another story I'll save for later. The script is for Papaverine (30mg/ml strength). I found 2 local compounding pharmacies that can supply it to me. One pharmacy quoted $20.67 for a 10 ml vial and the other one charges $17.75 for 10 ml. Seems to be awfully cheap. The prescription calls for a 1 ml dosage (full syringe), but since I got good erection results from a .2ml dose of Alprostadil I think I'll start with .2ml of Papaverine and increase if needed.

Steve: that sure does sound like a deal if it works. Do keep us posted. I think it does take a bit more of the drug to get the results. Best of luck.

Steve - I've seen quite a few posts and heard from several of the guys on here that the Caverject caused the same pain for them - changing to one of the mixes made all the difference in the world - AND a lot cheaper! Bonus! Take a stab at it and let us know how it goes. I go back to my uro on the 12th - need a new Rx myself - will be interested to hear how your mix works. Rick

I am pretty sure your pain is related to the full PGE1 and you'll get less pain with a bi or tri mix. Following my RRP the bimix wasn't quite enough for me to get 100% wood without topping out at nearly a full 1 ml, even tried the double strength bimix with not much difference, no pain but also no PGE1. Then I opted for the trimix, 30 papaverine/1 phentolamine/1 PGE1 and this did the trick at .55 ml. I get a tolerable amount of pain from the PGE1 which is the key ingredient to get things up fully.

I get mine from a compounding pharmacy in a 10 ml vial and it has a 90 day shelf life for $130 CDN. I just picked up my second vial and noticed that as my first vial approached the expiry date the drug lost a bit of efficacy resulting in me upping the dosage by 0.05 ml increments. I was also out of town for a couple of weeks and the expiry date had come and gone but the liquid is still clear and usable according to my pharmacist. Not so if it gets even the tiniest bit cloudy. BTW my needles are 29 gauge 1/2" 1 cc/ml capacity and I have never had a failure to launch, push it in all the way to the needle base and inject.

I'm gonna wait till Monday morning to try the Papaverine for the first time just as I did for the Alprostadil in case I have to make a visit to the clinic to deal with a possible case of priapism. I want to avoid a trip to the ER. A clinic visit will be cheaper (hopefully free) than the ER route ($100 co-pay).

Steve, I'm sorry you are having such a rough time with the injections. It's enough for a guy to deal with, having to stick a needle into his private parts and the well publicised risk of priapism (a little overstated IMHO) without getting the run around from your urolgist. OK I guess that may be a reaction with the concerns over litigation in a litigation crazy USA where Caverject is the only FDA approved option - or that's as I understand it.

My urology team do Bimix (no pain, less effective) then if unsuccessful, Trimix (sometimes a little pain, very powerful effects) and with both they start very low concentration and dosage. I went Bimix 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.2, 1.5 then due to insufficient effect the same with Trimix, where I settled on 1.2 and sometimes as low as 0.9. Caverject has fallen from favour at this practice due to the almost universal pain issues. With all the guys here singing the praises of Trimix - some have been on it for several years - it's ridiculous you can't get this prescription.

Trimix is therapeutic for a lot of guys. I wish I had it at 3 months as I would I am certain be able to function with Cialis only. As it is I am hopeful to do so one day if I keep persevering. I encourage you to overcome your mental barriers as this is your best shot at it. No pun intended.

Update:
Gave myself a .2ml (20 unit) injection of Papaverine this morning. It produced about a 50 percent erection that lasted about 30 minutes . Not enough to do the deed for sure but just enough for a good hand job. On Wednesday I'll increase to .4ml. The best thing about it was no pain whatsoever at any point during the process.
