I have posted elsewhere about my problems with pain from Alprostadil injections.
After having to increase the dose some weeks ago, the pain is becoming a problem.
(Note - I am in the UK so Trimix is not available)
One option suggested by Specialist Nurse for me is to consider a pump and rings. She said that she had lots of patients who loved them.
I have previously avoided this because of stories about ‘hingeing’, cold penises etc., as well as the 30 minute limit. Also, I never had any success with rings.
I said that I didn’t know whether the erection would be firm enough. At her suggestion I spoke to her preferred supplier who said that he believed I could achieve “a full erection” with the right ring(s). He also said that medical rings are different from play rings, and to give them a try.
My question is how good an erection are you able to achieve?
I guess that I have rather got used to the rigidity that the injection gives me,
Any advice welcome.

Hi Rich;
Injections caused me a great deal of pain too. That was the last straw for me. I moved to implant after that. I bought a pump from a sex toy shop for $60 CAD and use it after my implant to assist the LGX with size. (I had never heard of implants before I woke up with one. My doctor has written a few papers on pumping before and after implant. I like it and have already noticed a difference.

Re: Thinking about using a Pump
There have been several accounts here from men who report good results with VED. In my experience I found the pump to be clumsy and only marginally effective. The real deal breaker was my wife - she hated it. We mutually decided that no sex at all was preferable to the VED. The pump was the last stop on my journey to the implant, which I think is the best possible solution (even though I have never used mine, but that's a different story).
Dave, 80, Maryland - Implant (Titan) 2008 by Dr. Andrew Kramer (failed Sept 2020) - never used due to a stroke that, among other things, ended my sex life.

Hi Dave;
I have never used the pump for what it was designed for (getting pumped up just before sex). I only use mine to assist my LGX in enhancing length and girth. I find that my dick is really uncomfortable after using the VED, I don't think I would enjoy sex after using it.

Re: Thinking about using a Pump
I have been using pumps for about ten years. In the beginning, I used a pump with a vacuum gauge for exercising and rehabilitation. When pills stopped being effective, I got a VED and some Osbon tension bands and we have been pleased with the results. My erections are rock hard, not hinged, and not cold. However, I do need to remove the tension band after 25 minutes.
We normally have intercourse in the morning which gives me enough time to prepare myself properly while doing my morning routine in the bathroom. I usually pump with my pump equipped with a vacuum gauge for 15minutes at 5 in/hg and then pump up in my VED for about 30 seconds before slipping on my Osbon tension band. This process generates a harder, slightly thicker and longer erection than my normal erection (when I used to get erections). The erection remains good for up to 25 minutes, But does start to loose sensitivity after 15minutes. If I need more time, I need to remove the tension band for about 5 minutes during which time I usually perform oral before slipping the tension band back on; however, I sometimes need to repump up my erection in the VED. A bit inconvenient but well worth the effort.

Re: Thinking about using a Pump
My question is how good an erection are you able to achieve?
I have had excellent success with a VED. It took months and months of "practice" before I was comfortable enough to try it during sex.
It is not something most can stick their dick in, pump up once, slap a ring on, and go to it. There is a period of time where you should not
even put a ring on, just pump and release over and over. Even after you learn to get a decent erection there is a learning period associated with
the ring(s). You have to experiment with brands, sizes, and even number that will maximize the experience for both of you.
I have found after using the pump for a number of years now that I have barely any cooling effect. My erections are firm and I have heard no complaints
from the one who determines when, where, and how often. If she were not totally satisfied I would be trying something else.
Some have had success using a foam sleeve to minimize the hinge effect.
There are tons of threads on this board discussing various ways men have used the VED with success.
Good luck. It takes practice, patience, willingness to experiment, and, above all, a sense of humor.
Married 50+ years. Use VED for sex and do
daily exercises with both water and vacuum pumps.

Re: Thinking about using a Pump
I started using the VED at age 30. It literally saved my sex life since nothing else worked for my severe venous leak.
Make sure you get a good pump and practice. My erections are larger and harder than before. I get some hinge effect, but my penis doesn't really get too cold even after a good period of time.
If you dedicate yourself to making this work, it will.

Early 40s old diagnosed with severe venous leak by Dr. Irwin Goldstein, Dr. Arnold Mehlman and my local urologist. Using Pos-T-Vac Boss 2000-2 (battery powered Vacuum Erection Device) since 2005.

Your story is very much like my story, however, the injections for me hurt like hell right from the beginning and I sucked at finding the mark. They only worked for me about 50% of the time. My wife said "it's ok, I understand, it will get better" but I knew she was really disappointed and so was I. I told the doctor about it and when I went under the knife to fix screw-ups from two other doctors (urologist and plastic surgeon) Dr. Brock installed the AMS CX... I got infection and went into septic shock a month later (very rare) and had my implant removed. 6 months later he implanted the AMS LGX and my wife and I LOVE IT. I also use the VED while cycling daily but my primary erection comes from the implant. Wish I had known about the implant 33 years ago.

Excuse my ignorance but, what is the hinge effect? I have seen it mentioned several times but I don't know what it is.
