Caverject pains?

Postby cotham876 » Wed Apr 18, 2012 3:15 pm

I am about to go on injections later this month. Here in UK they tend to use Caverject.
I have gleaned from a couple of people that this system is not popular in USA as it is painful. The needle I presume.
Any comment would be greatly appreciated by this cowardly Brit!

Cotham,

We LAUGH at needles here ... that is not the issue with Caverject or any other shots method.

The Pfizer site says this about that ...

Penile Pain: Penile pain after intracavernosal administration of CAVERJECT was reported at least once by 37% of patients in clinical studies of up to 18 months in duration. In the majority of the cases, penile pain was rated mild or moderate in intensity.

So you have 1 in 3 chance of experiencing the Alprostadil (PGE-1) Ache. Some percentage of that 1/3 will get ache with any amount of PGE-1 and even Trimix would not be comfortable.

I am one of the lucky guys that it does not cause me pain and it works great. The problem we have here in the US is that it is $$$$$$$$ way more expensive than TriMix. My Dr. likes the Alprostidal (Caverject) better because he said it is less likely to have to make an ER run with a 4 hr hard on.

I have used TriMix and BiMix as well. All work just as well for me.

The Pain is caused by the Drug not the needle.

If I understand correctly, Caverject is the brand name for Alprostidal--one of the drugs in Trimix. Isn't that right, Jeff?

Thanks for those posts guys. My concern was the needle not consequential pain, although that is important too.

It's mainly a psychological thing with me. Cost? luckily we don't have to worry about that too much here.

Will update later.

Yes, you are correct, as well as the ingredient in Edex. The uniqueness of Caverject and Edex is their delivery systems, I understand. Their pricing is unconscionable. What you are paying $$$$$$$$ for is their delivery systems.

Alprostidal is a generic that is very inexpensive itself. My compounding pharmacist tells me that the cost of the materials for 4 mL of my Trimix is $8.45. That is what I am charged.

Hi

I’m also in the UK and have been using Caverject Dual Chamber for a few months now. The pain from the needle is slight, take it steady use the points at 10-2 and you’ll be fine.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Caverject is a wasteful system and that is why my uro won't prescribe it. You mix the powder with a solution, inject, and throw the rest away. Somewhere i've read, taking the fluid out and filling single solutions for later use...Tom..

Yes if you get some of the cheaper/smaller capacity syringes (.3ml ... ,5ml ,, you can pull the plungers all the way out and you could then
inject into a bunch of smaller syringes from the main Caverject syringe. (just tricky putting the plungers back in -- gotta tilt so the air goes out when the plunger goes in .,. not the liquid!!).

definitely waste not want more!
